A One Direction Guy Suffered from an Eating Disorder and You Had No Idea
If you thought Little Mix‘s book, Our World, was eye-opening, just wait until you hear the details about Zayn Malik‘s autobiography.
Just as Jade Thirlwall used her group’s novel to share emotional details about her past struggle with anorexia, the 23-year-old spoke about the eating disorder he suffered from during his days with One Dirction in Zayn, his first official book that comes out tomorrow.
According to someone who got access to the story early, the “Pillowtalk” crooner admitted to battling an eating disorder at the end of 2014 and still finds it hard to look at pictures of himself from that time. Here’s what ZM looked like during that period:

Gigi Hadid‘s boyfriend also talks about the debilitating anxiety he’s faced since performing with 1D in the book, and talked about the time he had to pull out of a massive gig because he physically couldn’t make it to the stage.
“I just couldn’t go through with it,” he explained. “Mentally, the anxiety had won. Physically, I knew I couldn’t function. I would have to pull out…Anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of; it affects millions of people every day. I know I have fans out there who have been through this kind of thing, too, and I wanted to be honest for their sake, if nothing else.”
Despite the struggles he faced as a member of one of the most popular bands of all time, Zayn says he is still very “proud” of everything the Brits accomplished together.
“I can honestly say I’m proud of a lot of stuff from the One Direction days. I’m not sure people realize that, but I am. I’ve got the memorabilia — the platinum discs we received with every album — all over my house. I have a wall dedicated to displaying them. One Direction was an incredible experience in its own right, and it’s a part of me, an integral part of my history, and I’m never going to deny that aspect of my life.”
We are so proud of Zayn for opening up about this incredibly personal and sensitive topic!
These 9 other male stars also battled an eating disorder:
Tyler happens to be one of the funniest guys on YouTube, but unbeknownst to his fans, he was privately struggling with an eating disorder. He told Seventeen, "Talking about it is really hard because it's something I suppress and work through every day." And he also added, "I haven't really talked about body image in videos. I assume when people read this, they’ll be like, 'Oh, you're not fat.' That's not what it's about at all. Even when I was the skinniest I'd ever been, I was still not happy."
Tyler talked about his experience in his autobiography, Binge, and told Out magazine that he feels his story can help other people who have been through it.
