Proof Zayn Malik’s “Extreme” Mental Illness is Worse Than You Thought

When Zayn Malik first announced his departure from One Direction, he was excited “to be a normal 22-year-old.” But things quickly shifted when the singer signed a solo record deal and released his first album without the rest of the 1D guys, Mind of Mine. Although things seemed to be going perfectly for the British hunk, not everything on the outside always matches what’s happening on the inside.

Back in June, Gigi Hadid’s boyfriend was forced to cancel his performance at London’s Capital Summertime Ball because he was suffering from the “worst anxiety” of his career. Although talk of his mental illness has slowly died down over the summer and some assumed that it was a one-time thing, Zayn is still very much battling the disorder and announced the cancellation of another one of his upcoming gigs.

“I have been working over the last three months to overcome my extreme anxiety around major live solo performances I feel I am making progress, but I have today acknowledged that I do not feel sufficiently confident to move forward with the planned show in Dubai in October,” he wrote in a statement. “I am assured that all tickets will be refunded. I am truly sorry to disappoint you. I hope to see you all soon. Thank you to all my fans who support me globally.”

Sure, the tall, dark and handsome man says he is “making progress” in facing his mental health struggles, but fans seem to think the repeated cancellations tell a very different story, and his battle with anxiety is something that’s been going on for much longer than he ever let on.

Ultimately, anxiety disorders are very real and can definitely be crippling. We hope Zayn gets the help he needs and eventually feels comfortable to get back on stage and do what he loves.
