Why Zayn Malik’s “BeFoUr” is Definitely a Hardcore One Direction Diss

By  |

When Zayn Malik first announced he was going solo, he promised his new music would be more personal than ever. And although he’s only released a few songs off Mind of Mine so far, he’s definitely holding true to his word; “Like I Would” was absolutely written with his ex Perrie Edwards in mind, and his newest release “BeFoUr” is so shady it almost hurts

This song is the one fans have been most anxious to hear, especially because they originally thought it was going to be his album title. Let’s just take a moment to pick about the spelling used — Before we listened, we gave Zayn the benefit of the doubt; maybe it wouldn’t just be a unique way of changing up the word ‘before.’ But now that we heard the new tune in all its glory, we know there’s literally ZERO reason that the 23 year old needed to spell it like that… well, except as a less-than-subtle diss shout out to One Direction’s CD, Four.

If the song’s title isn’t enough to prove that this is the track that talks about the band’s demise, just wait until you hear some of the lyrics. The British artist starts off by singing, “I’ve done this before / not like this.” Um…yeah. Quite literal if you ask us. Zayn then goes on to croon, “So say what you wanna say, what you want / Shame is you won’t say that to my face.” We all remember the time the 1D boys talked about their still-strong bond with their former bandmate even after he left, only to have the brunette completely shoot them down and admit that none of the guys have returned his texts or calls. Coincidence? We think not.

And that just scratches the surface. Take a look at the entire set of lyrics and get ready to be overwhelmed by the shade.

I’ve done this before…
Not like this

I don’t drink to get drunk
I feel all the right funk
If there’s something I want
I’ll take all the right wrongs
Now, I’m gonna stay in my zone
I’m tired of picking that bone
And I can’t be bothered to fight it no more, no!

Numb on a roof
Set it on fire
Just to give me proof
I’m living on a wire
Numb on a roof
Set it on fire
Just to give me proof
I’m living on a wire
So say what you wanna say, what you gotta say, now
So say what you wanna say, what you want
Shame is you won’t say that to my face

I’ve done this before
Not like this, not like this

Time for me to move up
So many hours have gone
Heart beats the pump of my blood
No strings for you to pull on
You’ve got your tongue in your cheek
So pardon if I don’t speak
Hand to my cuts into your soul, no

Numb on a roof
Set it on fire
Just to give me proof
I’m living on a wire

So say what you wanna say, what you wanna
So say what you wanna say, what you gotta say, now
So say what you wanna say
So say what you wanna say, what you want
Shame is you won’t say that to my face

I’ve done this before
Not like this, not like this

Flashing lights
So say what you wanna say, what you wanna
So say what you wanna say, what you gotta say, now
So say what you wanna say, what you want
Shame is you won’t say that to my face
So say what you wanna say, what you wanna
So say what you wanna say, what you gotta say, now
So say what you wanna say, what you want
Shame is you won’t say that to my face

I’ve done this before…
Not like this, not like this
I’ve done this before…

Not like this, not like this…

See what we’re saying?? “You’ve got your tongue in your cheek, so pardon if I don’t speak…” You mean like how you were actually miserable in 1D for years because you couldn’t express yourself creatively, Zayn?! Ugh. We are over-freakin’-whelmed. Listen to “BeFoUr” below and tell us your thoughts on the tune’s meaning below — Do you think it’s about One Direction?
