9 Phenomenal YA Books That Have a Badass Asian Main Character

By  |

Think about some of your favorite YA books — Twilight! The Hunger Games! Before I Fall! The Fault in Our Stars! While all four of those novels are vastly different, there’s one thing that they all have in common: the main characters are white. Sure, there are some fan theories that state Hermione in Harry Potter was actually a black character (and now a woman of color plays her in The Cursed Child with J.K. Rowling‘s blessing) but let’s face it — popular young adult paperbacks seriously lack diversity.

Even some TV execs noticed this pattern and decided to cast Asian actors in roles that were originally intended for Caucasians. While that’s all fine and dandy, it’s important that we start giving books of all genres that celebrate diversity the attention they deserve. Hopefully some of these riveting novels will get movie adaptations soon, so we can see some of our fave Asian actors and actresses on the big screen!
