12 of the Absolute WORST Internet Trends of 2017

By  |

There’s no denying that the Internet can be a pretty interesting place. Of course, that can be a good or a bad thing depending on who you ask. Either way, everything we need to know (and everything we do NOT need to know) is at our fingertips within seconds, and even though most of the time the Internet can be pretty awesome, other times it can just be plain… weird.

Also, there’s no real way of knowing what trends are going to catch on each year, but it definitely seems like, year after year, Internet trends only keep getting more bizarre. For example, how many videos did you see last year of people taking part in the “Juju on that Beat” dance challenge? Probably A LOT… and for no real reason at all!

And how about the long-lost era of Pokémon GO? Remember when people everywhere were aimlessly walking around their neighborhoods as they desperately tried to catch a Zubat? Yeah… we’re trying to forget that, too. However, even though we can never listen to “Juju on that Beat” ever again or even think about downloading the Pokémon app, believe it or not, there have been Internet trends that have been even WORSE. Remember Harambe? *shutters*

In case you don’t, in May 2016, a little boy climbed into a gorilla enclosure in the Cincinnati Zoo and was grabbed by a gorilla named Harambe. Unfortunately, the zookeepers were left with no choice but to shoot at Harambe to ensure the safety of the child. However, when news of Harambe’s death went viral, the Internet took it and ran with it, turning it into a meme and one of the most unfortunate trends of 2016.

Of course, those weren’t the only terrible Internet trends of years past. In the past few years, there have been tons of dabbing, planking and caking on layers upon layers of makeup for reasons we are still unsure of. What we’re getting at is, weird Internet trends aren’t going anywhere, and honestly, some of the worst we’ve ever seen happened this year! Take a look:
