Wilmer Valderrama is “Devastated” by Demi Lovato’s Alleged Overdose
Wilmer Valderrama and Demi Lovato were together for six years before they broke up in June 2016, meaning that they saw each other through extreme highs and extreme lows. In fact, the 25-year-old previously credited the 38-year-old for saving her life in multiple ways, including helping her get through an eating-disorder relapse AND encouraging her to get sober years ago.
While the celebrities are no longer dating, they’re still close friends and you can only imagine how heartbroken the NCIS star was to hear that his ex is in the hospital for an apparent drug overdose.
“Wilmer is completely devastated and he still loves Demi and it was just a matter of scheduling and time that they needed to make a romantic relationship work. He was not aware that her issues were this severe and intense at this time,” a source tells Us Weekly.
The source continues, “She’s been honest with him about her relapse, as she has with her family, friends, fans and the entire public, especially with her new song, but he didn’t think it was this severe and that she would be struggling so much and have a situation that had these repercussions.”
Another insider tells PEOPLE that Wilmer was “shocked” by the news, even though he was aware that she had recently relapsed.
“He knew she was going through a tough time but he wasn’t prepared for this,” the source explains. “He saw her through so many ups and downs and was her rock through some of her darkest moments. To see her back in such a sad and vulnerable place is heartbreaking for him.”
The That ’70s Show alum was asked on an Australian radio show about DL’s relapse last month, but he remained pretty tight-lipped about how she was doing.
“I respect her and I love her so much. That is something that is so personal and very hard to understand. I think that it’s better if we all just kinda sit back and let her work it out.”
