Pharrell & Anna Kendrick Weaseled Their Ways Onto Miss America in the Best Way Possible
The nation has a new Miss America — congrats to New York’s own Kira Kazantsev! We’re super pumped to see the beautiful California native representing the country because, fun fact, we went to college with her! Actually, to be more accurate, we LIVED with her during her first year at Hofstra University. (Shameless alma mater plug. Deal with it.)
Not only is she a great role model for raising awareness of domestic violence, but she’s also a one-of-a-kind woman when it comes to her talents. In a performance inspired by Anna Kendrick in Pitch Perfect, the 22-year-old beauty went against the grain and crooned Pharrell Williams‘ “Happy” single, while tapping out the “Cups” routine from the comedic film. She says, “The reason why I chose to do that talent is I wanted every single little girl in America to be able to see that you can do that talent — you can do whatever talent you want on national television — even with a red cup — and still be Miss America and have the time of your life.”
She continues, “I literally in that minute and 30 seconds had the most fun I’ve ever had, and that’s because I stayed true to myself and I did what I wanted to do for my talent, no matter what everybody else told me, and it paid off. I’m very happy about it.”
Since the crowning, the public’s been quite vocal about Kira’s performance, including Anna Kendrick herself:
