The Truth About Jena Malone’s Bald Head in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2
Jennifer Lawrence‘s hair really went through the ringer for The Hunger Games. Toward the beginning of the franchise, it’s said that she dyed her naturally blonde locks a deep shade of brown to look more like how the series’ heroine, Katniss Everdeen, is described in the books. But after all the chemicals, in her own words, “fried” her hair, she chopped it all off, and the stylists settled on a wig in the later films.
But she’s not the only one who had to make big decisions regarding her tresses — Jena Malone, who portrayed Johanna Mason since The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, also had to change up her look by the Mockingjay movies.
In an exclusive clip, the 31-year-old, newly-pregnant actress reveals, “With Johanna’s look in this film, we really wanted to make it the best that it could be, and so, I mean, I sat with Francis [Lawrence, the director], I was like, ‘Listen, I’ve shaved my head before, let’s do it, I’m ready, like, let’s go there.'”
However, that perfectly bald head wasn’t her own. “He was reticent because of the way we were shooting it,” she explained. “It was going back and forth between having hair, having no hair.”
Francis further elaborated, saying that Jena only shot for five days over the course of 10 months. So would it really have made sense to have her get rid of everything IRL? No.
