Vanessa Hudgens Forced to Pay Big Money for One Smol Instagram Picture
The verdict is in on the case against Vanessa Hudgens, in which she was charged with misdemeanor violations of defacing and/or damaging natural features on U.S. Forest Service land. Because of one smol Instagram picture, the 27-year-old actress now has to pay $1,000 in restitution. That’s one expensive snapshot!
Here’s the scoop: On Valentine’s Day 2016, the High School Musical alum and her 24-year-old boyfriend, Austin Butler, shared what we’re sure was a romantic hike through Coconino National Forest in Flagstaff, AZ. Unfortunately, things went sour real quick after she posted pictures & a video from the outing:
The first few photos were perfectly fine, but it’s the last one (which has since been deleted) that sent the media and law enforcement into a frenzy.
As we learned in February, when the desecration took place, federal law prohibits anyone from “damaging natural surfaces or property of the United States.” Since the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest is on U.S. soil, then it’s grounds for punishment. Thus, the hefty fine… but it could’ve been WAY worse. The offense is punishable by up to six months in jail and a maximum $5,000 citation. So, when you think about it, her sentence is probably the best thing that could’ve happened in this situation, right?
Then again, if no one knew her name, then this may’ve not happened at all. “She was caught in the act because she publicized it and she’s famous,” said Coconino National Forest Service spokesman Brady Smith. “I’m sure there are others who are not famous and publicized it and we’ve never known.”
Thankfully, Vanessa wasn’t be arrested for her crimes… like these former Disney stars:
