‘The Vampire Diaries’ Spin-Off Called ‘The Originals’ in the Works

With the overwhelming popularity of The Vampire Diaries (and demise of other series on the network, like Gossip Girl), The CW’s making a move that may bank on the sci-fi show’s success. Within its current season, TVD‘s Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) are set to embark on a journey that will launch the characters into their own spin-off.

The Hollywood Reporter says The Originals, its working title, would revolve around the Original family led, of course, by Joseph’s character. “Klaus returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans, a town he helped build centuries ago, and is reunited with his diabolical former protege Marcel. The Secret Circle‘s Phoebe Tonkin, who joined Vampire Diaries this season in a pivotal recurring role, will also star.” In case you’re unfamiliar, the Original family is composed of the first existing vampires in the world, with Klaus being the only known hybrid (vampire/werewolf) at the time. Though neither Joseph nor Phoebe made a formal statement, Miss Tonkin did take to Twitter to confirm the news via retweet. As of now, no other members of the TVD cast, past or present, have been slated for the offshoot.

This isn’t the first time talk of a spin-off was announced. Back in April of last year, buzz about a show based on Ian Somerhalder and Matthew Davis‘ characters, Damon and Alaric’s characters respectively, was greenlit for The CW, “bypassing the pilot stage,” according to TVFanatic.com. But, as we all know, no such series came to fruition.

Look out for the set-up of The Originals on The Vampire Diaries episode airing on April 25. What do you think of the concept? Leave your thoughts below or on our Vampire Diaries message board!
