6 Awesome Duets from 2017 You Still Can’t Believe Actually Happened
As with every year, 2017 was full of surprises when it came to live performances. With each new song, awards show, and live performance, fans were left wondering if the artist would shock fans with an entirely new arrangement, an epic medley of their hit songs, or a surprising collaboration with another musician. It was anyone’s guess, really, but based on years prior, it was safe to say that 2017 would include some amazing (and random) collaborations between some unexpected artists.
Think about Lady Gaga‘s 2014 collaboration with Tony Bennett, for example. Little Monsters were shocked when they found out the two were working on an album together, titled Cheek To Cheek, but even though it seemed way out of left field, somehow, it worked! Gaga and Tony went on tour together in 2015, hitting up 36 cities across Europe and North America, and even some music festivals, too! Even though this collaboration was completely unexpected, Gaga is sort of an old soul, so their collaboration was definitely a match made in heaven.
Even more random than the Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett collaboration was the duet between Eminem and Elton John during the 2001 Grammys. As it turns out, Elton was a pretty big fan of Eminem at the time, and agreed to perform his song “Stan” alongside him at the ceremony to show his support for the rapper, who received a lot of criticism that year for his violent and hateful lyrics. However, Elton was able to appreciate his art for what it was, and realized that the songs were created from the perspective of Eminem’s alter ego, Slim Shady. Not only was this an unlikely duet, but it seemed like it turned into an even more unlikely friendship!
The point is, you never really know who’s going to collaborate next, especially since shock value is everything in the music industry. If you don’t believe us, just think about Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson‘s Super Bowl performance in 2004, or Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke‘s VMA performance in 2013. People couldn’t hear enough about those two performances, and although many are not as controversial, many unlikely duets happened this year that got the whole world talking! Check it out!
