8 TV Shows That Were More Successful Than the Movies They’re Based On
It’s pretty common for TV shows to get a movie spinoff, like when Veronica Mars came back as a BIG film on the big screen in 2014, but movies becoming TV shows don’t usually do as well. It is actually very tough to gain a following for a TV show that is inspired by, or a spinoff of, a big box office hit. Some shows however are way more successful and popular than the movies they are based on, which is awesome.
It doesn’t happen very often, but there have been some epic TV series that have surpassed their movie counterpart that we had to recognize. With the beginning of Shadowhunters in 2016, which will be the TV version of the failed The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones film, we’re hoping this new series falls into the successful TV show spinoffs category. Fingers crossed! See which TV shows already made it into that category below.
Based on the 1985 film Teen Wolf, the MTV series spinoff, which began in 2011, has surpassed the movie with its continued success and BIG following. The '80s film was goofy and wild, but it did star Michael J. Fox, which meant there would be a LOT of comparison going in for the teen show. Luckily, the show took a different look at the teen-turned-werewolf storyline, by adding more depth to the characters. The TV show is ridiculously clever and totally scary, which is one of the main reasons it has survived so long. It has broken through the teen demographic it originally catered to and it is now going into its sixth season. Talk about exceeding expectations.
