The Season 5 summer finale of Pretty Little Liars brought on some crazy theories about its lead villain. So you can bet that with The Vampire Diaries, Season 6 well on its way — October 2, get at us! — the theories for the hit show on The CW are coming out of the woodworks, too. Here are three such fan theories about the upcoming season:

1. Elena will die. Technically, she’s already dead, but this is a different type of death. “Damon has always put Elena before just about everything and everyone else, and now that Elena has lost Damon, there’s no doubt in my mind that she’ll try to do the same for him. Unfortunately, it won’t be easy to get Damon back — right now, it seems almost impossible. The show certainly won’t make it easy for Elena to reunite with her lost love, and given that Bonnie isn’t around to make magic happen, I’m thinking that Elena is going to have to be thrown through the ringer to find Damon and bring him home. How could she do that? By dying.”—Bustle

2. Damon may return… as a mortal! “The CW’s hit series is based on The Vampire Diaries books by L.J. Smith. While the TV show doesn’t follow the books, they could possibly draw some inspiration from a couple of story lines — like Damon turning into a human… The action occurs in Shadow Souls when a bouquet of flowers from a Kitsune magically turns Damon back into a human. The twist is that the flowers weren’t meant for Damon — they were meant as a gift for Stefan so that he could be with Elena as a human.”—IB Times

3. Elena and Katherine are one and the same. This is more of an ongoing theory rather than for the sixth season specifically: “But, really, how trippy would it be if, somehow, Elena was sent back in time (via a witch spell or doppelganger side effect or whatever) and we realized that she and Katherine have always been the same person? Sure, it would take a bit of retconning. And Elena would have to fall in with a lovely Bulgarian family who adopts her as one of their own, but we think it’d be well worth it.”—Wetpaint
