The First Trailer for The Hate U Give is Here and It’s Beyond Haunting
Angie Thomas‘ novel, The Hate U Give, is one of the most important YA stories of recent time, and the movie is going to be just as amazing. The flick’s first trailer was released last night and, let us be the ones to tell you, you’re going to need a box of tissues before watching.
The Hate U Give tells the story of Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg), “a prep school student who witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides of the community, she must find her voice and decide to stand up for what’s right.”
K.J. Apa also stars in the movie, replacing Kian Lawley as Starr’s boyfriend, Chris. Sabrina Carpenter, Regina Hall and Issa Rae are also featured.
We were lucky enough to be on the Hate U Give set in Atlanta, Georgia, last year (more on that coming to Clevver.com soon), and the 19-year-old opened up about filming the emotional scenes, some of which are featured in the trailer.
“The most challenging scenes were shooting Khalil’s death, the shooting by the cop and the interrogation scene directly after,” she said. “Those were the most challenging. And also just having to cover up the grief. That’s what is kind of challenging, is immediately after Starr goes through this event she has to then cover up that feeling while being in a space she doesn’t really feel like she belongs in and I think that’s really hard.”
The Hate U Give is coming to theaters October 19, 2018.
