Oh, So That’s What Happened After Taylor Swift & Harry Styles’ Accident

By  |

The mystery of Taylor Swift & Harry Styles‘ short-lived romance has been solved. Well, maybe. While there are many theories behind Haylor‘s 2013 breakup after only a month and a half of ~*dating*~ — like the one in which the One Direction cutie dumped the blonde pop star because of her antique obsession — Taylor’s latest music video may be the last piece in the puzzle everyone’s been looking for.

In the footage for the 26-year-old’s new single, “Out of the Woods,” which she premiered on New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with only an hour or so left on the clock before midnight struck, the words She lost him. take over the screen at the very beginning. It then depicts a blue-dressed Taylor running through the woods, proceeding to fall in the mud, and become entangled in vines. At the end of the 4 minutes and 16 seconds, the words She lost him are emblazoned across the screen once again; only this time, they’re followed by, but she found herself and somehow that was everything. Could it be that the accident she was once unable to speak about caused the couple’s downfall?

If you look back at Taylor’s 2014 cover story with Rolling Stone, she speaks about “Out of the Woods” in detail, saying she was inspired by a snowmobile ride with one of her exes, who lost control of the vehicle. The only reason no one heard of the accident is because of a little thing called a non-disclosure agreement. “You know what I’ve found works even better than an NDA? Looking someone in the eye and saying, ‘Please don’t tell anyone about this,'” said the singer at the time. Sounds pretty bitter, no? Considering the former pair went on a ski vacation together in which Harry sported a rather large chin injury — or chinjury, if you will — many already assumed “OOTW” was about him (as 1989 as a whole is basically an ode to their 5 or 6 weeks together anyway). Now, in the music video for this very song allegedly about him and the accident, she’s saying that she lost him but found herself in the process. Perhaps that knock in the head made her see the light.

For more details on their rocky (quite literally) relationship, here are the lyrics:

Looking at it now, it all seems so simple
We were lying on your couch, I remember
You took a Polaroid of us
Then discovered (then discovered)
The rest of the world was black and white
But we were in screaming color
And I remember thinking

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good.
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good.
Are we out of the woods?

Looking at it now, last December
We were built to fall apart, then fall back together
Your necklace hanging from my neck,
The night we couldn’t quite forget
When we decided (We decided)
To move the furniture so we could dance
Baby, like we stood a chance
Two paper airplanes flying, flying, flying
And I remember thinking

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good

Are we out of the woods?

Remember when you hit the brakes too soon
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying
Baby, I did too
But when the sun came up
I was looking at you
Remember when we couldn’t take the heat
I walked out, I said, I’m setting you free
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up
You were looking at me

You were looking at me
Oh!
You were looking at me.
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods? (I remember)
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet? (Oh, I remember)

In the clear yet, good
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good
