11 Surefire Signs You’re Not Washing Your Hair Enough
If you have been paying attention to the various beauty gurus and bloggers and editors that are available to any given consumer on any given day on the Internet, chances are good that you have been treated to at least one tip: that shampoo is poison, basically, and every time you use it you are destroying your hair.
That is my takeaway of the advice from the beauty blogger industrial complex, anyway. Over the past two years or so, the messaging has been pretty consistent. Too much shampoo is ruining your hair, so, if you would like to not ruin your hair, you have to wash it less — only once a week, perhaps, or when Mercury is retrograded or something.
I took this advice to heart and began to cut back on my shampoo in a big way. At first, this helped. My hair is naturally thick and coarse, so skipping unnecessary washes made it feel less dry, less prone to split ends, and just better-looking overall. But then, as is the case with me and most of my endeavors, I took it too far.
Eventually, it got to the point where I began to feel guilty if I ended up having to wash my hair two days in a row, or even just every other day, which is ridiculous. It’s my own hair! To whom might I be feeling guilt towards about it, besides the beauty bloggers I follow on Instagram who have perfect hair and allegedly only wash it when there is a full moon? It makes no sense! They don’t even care about my hair, anyway! (What does it mean that the no-‘poo movement impacted me to the point in which I had created and internalized my own emotional labor for it? Do not ask me, because I don’t know and I don’t want to know!) Anyway. If you, too, have been feeling a discord between how often you have been told you should be washing your hair and how often you feel like you should be washing your hair, check out these signs that you’re not washing your hair enough:
