8 Signs Demi Lovato was Struggling Again Before Being Hospitalized
July 25, 2018
was rushed to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering from an Demi Lovato apparent overdose. Of course, fans and friends of the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer instantly took to Twitter to express their concerns for Demi and to send her their prayers. Hours later, we got the news we were all hoping for: that Demi was “okay and stable.”
Despite knowing that Demi’s had a long history with battling mental illness and substance abuse, fans were still shocked to find out that she’d gone into such a dark downward spiral that it led to an overdose. In fact, the news came as such a surprise that we all began to wonder if there were signs we missed that proved she was struggling again. As it turns out, there were a bunch of clues we may have missed. Take a look:

She admitted to relapsing after six years of sobriety.
The most obvious sign that Demi was struggling again came when she released her latest single,
"Sober," back in June. In the song, Demi got candid with her fans, admitting to and apologizing for breaking her six-year-long sobriety.
In the song, Demi sings, "Mama, I'm so sorry I'm not sober anymore // And Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor // To the ones who never left me // We've been down this road before // I'm so sorry, I'm not sober anymore."
Considering she was so honest about the relapse, many people assumed she'd already been seeking help. Unfortunately, we now know that the relapse she was referring to in the song was not just a one-time thing, but the first sign that she was falling back into her addictive behaviors.

She's been spotted partying more frequently.
When it comes to people who are trying to stay sober, most would agree that it helps to not spend any time at bars or clubs. Why? Well, these are typically places where alcohol is served and drugs are commonly used, and understandably, these things could be huge triggers for people struggling with addiction.
That being said, Demi's been spotted at more bars and clubs than usual in the past few months, which definitely should've raised some eyebrows. Of course, that's absolutely not enough to prove that she was once again using, but in hindsight, we think this definitely could've been considered a warning sign. Don't you?

She unfollowed Nick Jonas on social media.

Throughout the course of her entire career, one of Demi's best friends has always been
Nick Jonas. Nick has stuck by Demi's side through literally everything, so when we saw that she unfollowed him on Instagram last month, we couldn't believe our eyes.
While there's still no way of knowing for sure what happened between the former besties, we do think that this definitely could've been a big red flag that Demi fell back into her old ways and that Nick didn't want to be associated with that or that she didn't want to be around him.
The important thing is that, even though they were seemingly on the outs, Nick still has a lot of love for Demi. After finding out that she'd been hospitalized, he
shared a sweet message on Twitter that said, "Like all of you I am reeling at the news about Demi. All of us love her and need to pray for her to get well. She is a fighter. #prayfordemi." So sweet!

She had a falling out with her BFF, Marissa Callahan.
Even before things went sour with Nick, Demi appeared to be feuding with her longtime bestie,
. Back in May, Marissa threw shade Demi's way for not attending her birthday party, and even set her status to say, "bye bye b*tch." At first, no one would've known it was about Demi, but when Demi tweeted those exact same words, it became clear that there was some Marissa Callahan real beef between the two.
As if we needed any more confirmation that it was Demi she was referring to, Demi and both of her sisters unfollowed Marissa on social media. Again, this did appear to be about Demi failing to attend her birthday party, but who knows? Maybe there was more to it than just that!

She threw major shade at her former sober coach.
If you thought Nick and Marissa were the only people in Demi's life she's dropped recently, you'd be wrong. Earlier this month, her sober coach
posted a vlog on social media in which he shared his biggest pet peeves about celebs. Mike Bayer
He said, "I worked in entertainment for many years being a life coach for a lot of different pop stars and actors, and my biggest pet peeve is when they use excuses because they call themselves 'artists.'" Since Demi was his biggest client, this was very clearly about her, and of course, she responded.
Demi took to Twitter to throw some shade saying, "good luck on your blog." At the time, fans came to Demi's defense, but now that we know she's been having a hard time with her continuous battle with addiction, this may have been yet another warning sign that she was struggling.

She held what appeared to be an alcoholic beverage, but denied it.
Even though it looks like everything's fine in this photo, which was posted by Demi's friend Matthew back in April, it actually
caused some fans to question whether or not she was still sober. Turns out, in the photo Matthew posted, a glass that Demi was holding, which appeared to be filled with some sort of beverage, was edited out.
Of course, this noticeable edit left fans wondering what exactly was in the cup. When people began to speculate that it was alcohol, Demi took to Twitter to explain that it was actually Red Bull. While that's definitely possible, many couldn't help but wonder: if it wasn't alcohol, why did her friend even bother to edit out the cup in the first place?

She slurred and forgot the words to "Sober" while performing it live.
Although there have been signs that Demi's been struggling for months, she also showed some signs days before the overdose even happened. During her performance of "Sober" at the California Mid-State Fair over the weekend, fans captured video of the pop star slurring and straight up forgetting the words.
There's no denying that musicians forget their lyrics every now and then, but looking back, this was probably another indicator that Demi wasn't doing so well. Two days later, we were all shocked to hear that she suffered an overdose, but it did offer an explanation as to why she may have forgotten the words.

She seemed to be struggling with body image again.
The last thing we could think of that could possibly be considered a sign was when Demi tweeted out that she wasn't happy with her appearance, but that she was going to embrace it anyway.
In January she tweeted, "Feeling gross today at a photo shoot but I'm choosing to accept what I see because I love myself for who I am and your love and support gets me through moments like this. If you're struggling as well, don't forget... if I can do it, you can too!"
Although the message of this tweet is positive and meant to inspire fans who also struggle with body image issues, it was clear at the time that she still wasn't satisfied with her appearance. Sure, we all have those days, but maybe this was another clue that Demi was in a bad place once again.
