I grew up as a shy girl and I don’t remember a time I wasn’t shy. After a month of pre-school, my teacher nervously asked my parents if I had a problem because she had never heard me talk. In kindergarten, my teacher wanted to hold me back a year because I wasn’t communicating. Throughout middle school, I heard the same statements over and over again: “Jessica is a great student, but she never talks.” “Stop being so shy!” “I can’t hear her!” In high school, I spent most of my time dreading class presentations, attempting to navigate social situations and shrugging whenever someone asked me why I was so quiet.

Being shy in a world where outgoing, extroverted people are celebrated is not easy. Despite the fact that so many people out there are shy and socially awkward, it’s still something many don’t understand. Being shy caused me to miss out on a lot of things in my life, and it took a long time for me to become more outgoing. In the last few years, I’ve finally learned how to open up, but I still regularly find myself in situations where I feel like I’m being too quiet.
