Every Shawn Mendes Song Written by Teddy Geiger, Including “In My Blood”
May 20, 2018
We’ve been obsessed with
ever since he went Shawn Mendes viral on Vine, but now that he’s getting ready to release his third studio album our excitement is through the roof.
We’ve been given a taste of what to expect from
Shawn Mendes: The Album with singles “ In My Blood” and “ Lost in Japan,” and we can confidently say that it looks like this is going to be the best music the 19-year-old has put out so far. While we were busy freaking out over the new tunes, we realized that they all have something in common… and that thing is none other than Teddy Geiger.
Teddy is a singer-songwriter who found fame in the early 2000s and has since gone on to work with some of the biggest pop stars, including Shawn. The 29-year-old
came out as transgender last year and is slowly starting to come back into the spotlight. We love that she is feeling confident and comfortable in her own skin!
In honor of Teddy’s exciting new chapter of life and the fact that she was seriously involved in the creation of
Shawn Mendes: The Album, we thought it was only right to round up all of the incredible songs that the two have worked on together over the years. You’ll be listening to this playlist all day, trust us.

"Treat You Better"
"Treat You Better" was the lead single for Shawn's second studio album,
Illuminate, and was released back in 2016. Teddy worked on the tune with Scott Harris and it became an immediate success. It peaked at #6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and became the 19-year-old's second Top 10 hit.
Not only was "Treat You Better" successful among critics, but is also a fan-favorite. It was nominated for four awards including Best Pop Video at the MTV Video Music Awards and won the Radio Disney Music Award for Song Of The Year.

"Stitches" was Shawn's first big hit of his career and it will always have a special place in our hearts. The tune was on his first album,
Handwritten, and was the first song to earn serious radio play even though it was the third single.
Teddy wrote and produced "Stitches" with
Danny Parker and Daniel Kyriakides way back in 2014 and we are seriously grateful for them. The tune reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is known as the piece of work that helped Shawn break out from Vine.

"There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back"
It's next to impossible to think of "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" without automatically bursting out into the chorus. The 29-year-old actually wrote this tune WITH Shawn, which is probably why it's one of our all-time favorites.
Although it feels like we've been jamming out this song for years, it was only released in 2017 as part of the reissue of
Illuminate. "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the teen's third Top-10 single. How crazy is that?

"Mercy" was the second legit and third promotional single off of
Illuminate in 2016 and we can't believe we have been listening to it for almost two years.
Shawn actually co-wrote this tune with
Ilsey Juber and Danny Parker, with Teddy assisting, as well. She also played a major role in the song's production and worked closely with the singer to make sure it was perfect. We'll be the first to say that she totally killed it because just THINKING about "Mercy" gives us hardcore goosebumps.

"In My Blood"
It's hard to believe that
"In My Blood" was only released a few weeks ago because it already embedded itself into our hearts. Shawn calls this tune his most personal yet, but without Teddy it might not have come to life. It was the first song we heard from the upcoming album and showed a turning point in the Canadian crooner's music.

"Lost in Japan"
What we love the most about "Lost in Japan" is the fact that it is SO different than any other song we have heard from Shawn. And — you guessed it! — we have Teddy to thank. SM assisted in co-writing this funk-pop tune and we cannot get enough of these two working together!
"Lost in Japan" came out the day after "In My Blood" and although it isn't getting as much love, it is still one of our faves. In an interview with
, Shawn said that he was really inspired by Billboard Justin Timberlake when writing it and that he tried to emulate his music in the song. Nailed it!

We have to be honest and say that just
thinking about "Youth" gets us a little emotional. The song, featuring Khalid, focused on making a statement about staying strong after the Manchester terrorist attack at Ariana Grande's concert last May.
The tune is deeply personal and emotional and the 19-year-old even said that he and Khalid knew that they had to "write about what's going on in life and how the youth is feeling." Luckily, Teddy was right there to support their vision and create this masterpiece.

If you haven't listened to "Patience" before, you need to go do that right now. The song is the 11th track on
Illuminate and honestly would have done well as a single, in our opinion. Teddy and Shawn wrote the song together, which is actually pretty hilarious considering the fact that the 19-year-old told it is about an older girl who "hooked up" with him and then got scared about how young he was. True friendship! Billboard

"Understand" is super underrated and that's a fact. It is the last track on
Illuminate and was also the last song that Teddy and Shawn wrote for the album. In an interview with , the singer explained, "It was one of the last songs we wrote about life in general. That was one of the most organic, beautiful things we ever created. We were all laying on the floor in the studio with a notepad and the piano on loop." Rolling Stone
How do we get in on these studio sessions????

"No Promises" is further proof that any and ALL of Shawn's songs would do extremely well as singles. It is the eighth track on
Illuminate and is a little more upbeat than the rest of the tunes on the album. In an interview with Flare.com, the singer said, "'No Promises' is one of the coolest and most exciting songs that I ever wrote. It's about how in a relationship sometimes it's just better to go with the flow and not think about it too much. Just love, and that's pretty much all you gotta do."
Teddy not only co-wrote the tune with the 19-year-old, but she also produced it. Now THAT'S talent.
