Sadly, Lili Reinhart Isn’t the Only Riverdale Actress with Mental Illness

By  |

The Riverdale cast members haven’t lived the easiest lives. As we recently learned, depression runs through Lili Reinhart‘s family; she, herself, suffers through it. BUT, she’s making it easier for others to open up, helping to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. And it looks like another Riverdale actress is hoping to do the same.

On April 11, Shannon Purser, who plays Ethel Muggs on the series (though, you may recognize her more for her role as the late Barb Holland on Stranger Things #BarbDeservedBetter), released a series of tweets regarding her anxiety over her sexuality; tweets that deserve acknowledgement:

The 19-year-old star has been honest about her struggles on more than one occasion, opening up about her battles with anxiety, as well as self-harm, depression and suicidal thoughts.

“I felt very isolated,” she told Us Weekly. “I’m pretty introverted and I spend a lot of time in books, a lot of time thinking and by myself, because that’s what I enjoy to recharge. And I think that for a while my self-confidence and my tendency to want to be alone really didn’t do me any favors. So self-harm was something I could turn to that made me feel like I was doing something about all the negative feelings I had.”

“It’s very important to me that people know that depression doesn’t discriminate,” she added. “A lot of people look at people who have depression and think that it’s not legitimate because they’re wealthy or it looks like everything seems to be doing fine. But it doesn’t pick and choose. It can affect anybody in the brain, no matter how perfect your life seems.”

And they’re not the only ones. These 11 females also live with depression:
