Shailene Woodley Says She Was Strip-Searched After Being Arrested

Shailene Woodley was arrested for criminal trespassing and engaging in a riot while she was peacefully protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline in Sioux County, North Dakota, back in October 2016. The Big Little Lies actress was taken to Morton County Jail following the arrest where she says she was strip-searched by a police officer.

“I was strip-searched,” she said during a recent interview with Marie Claire U.K.. “Like get naked, turn over, spread your butt cheeks, bend over. They were looking for drugs in my a**.”

The 25-year-old didn’t have to stay in the jail for long, but her experience, albeit brief, was incredibly eye-opening.

She continued, “When you’re in a jail cell and they shut that door, you realize no one can save you. If there’s a fire and they decide not to open the door, you’ll die. You are a caged animal.”

Shai eventually plead not guilty to a lesser charge and “signed a plea agreement.”

“I’m on a year’s probation,” she told the magazine. “I’ve gotta watch my a**.”

The celebrity was initially confused when cops arrived to the protest with “giant guns and batons and zip ties…grabbed [her] by the jacket” and told her she was under arrest.

“I was trespassing like everyone,” the Divergent star said to the police officers who showed up at the scene. “As soon as you guys asked me to leave, I left. She was down there, everybody was down there; I’m being arrested. I was down there with everybody else. I don’t know what’s going on. As soon as they came I left…it’s because I’m well known. It’s because I have 40,000 people watching.”

Authorities arrested 26 other people at the time of the former Secret Life of the American Teenager lead’s arrest.
