Shailene Woodley Awkwardly Admits to Not Watching TV… at the Freakin’ Emmys!

By  |

Shailene Woodley may have been nominated for her work on HBO‘s mini-series, Big Little Lies, but when she admitted to never owning a television set in her adult life while on the Emmys red carpet, things got slightly awkward, and naturally, the Internet had a few thoughts on the matter.

In case you didn’t know, the Emmy Awards are all about honoring achievements in television. At this year’s Emmys, Shailene was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her role on Big Little Lies. But when Shai walked the carpet before the big awards show, she stopped to talk to E! News correspondent Jason Kennedy, who was just as shocked as we all were to hear her major truth bomb.

“All my friends who watch TV, I always ask them when they have time to,” she said. “When do people have time to? I’m a reader, so I always read a book.”

But it’s not that Shailene specifically chose NOT to have a TV, she also admitted to not even having a home to put one in. “I technically don’t have a home anywhere, so I suppose there’s no TV to put in that home,” she revealed. “I haven’t had a TV since I moved out of my parents’ house when I was 18.”

If you recall, Shailene got her start in acting, starring on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, a series that ran for five years. After that, she went on to star in movies, including The Fault in Our Stars and the Divergent series.

Critics online were quick to judge the 25-year-old’s answer, along with the simplicity of her life choices, and also pointed out the irony of where she revealed this statement a.k.a. television’s biggest night:

How about we all just let the girl live?! On that note, here’s to many more years of Shailene snagging award-nominated roles on shows she’ll probably never watch!
