In a move that Teen readers called “weird” and “strange,” Ansel Elgort, who plays Shailene Woodley‘s brother in the big-screen adaptation of Divergent, was cast as the love interest for Shailene’s character in the upcoming book-turned-movie, The Fault in Our Stars. However, the 21-year-old actress is sticking by the decision.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the former Secret Life star says, “I keep joking with Ansel about it. I’m like, ‘In a few months, buddy, you’re going to be my lover,’ adding “Ansel is so good. I’m so excited. He blew [the chemistry screen test] out of the water. And he’s a real sweetheart. I’m so excited to have him in my life.”

Ansel echoes the excitement: “[The Fault in Our Stars] is my favorite book. I’m lucky enough to be part of the new movie based off of it playing Augustus Waters. I couldn’t be happier right now!!!”

But what was it about Ansel that convinced the studio to hire him? Producer Wyck Godfrey says, “We were all swept away by the humor, charm, and aching vulnerability Ansel brought to his portrayal of Gus. His performance completely annihilated our concerns about his playing Caleb in Divergent with Shailene, and we are confident that the fans of Fault will fall in love with him the same way that Hazel does — slowly, and then all at once.”
