Shailene Woodley Says She Almost Quit Acting Before Booking Big Little Lies
Shailene Woodley got her first acting gig in 1999, which means she’s been in the industry for almost a decade at this point. You can imagine that working for so many years and being involved in some of the biggest projects would take its toll on anyone. The 26-year-old admits now that she almost quit acting entirely after she finished filming The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the third movie in trilogy.
“There was a point in my life, right before Big Little Lies, where I had hit a wall with acting,” she tells Porter magazine. “I felt it was time to do something different. I called my agents and said, ‘Please don’t send me any more scripts; I need to explore other avenues.’’ They respected me and didn’t send me anything for almost a year until Big Little Lies.”
But even when the script for the HBO hit series, which is based on Liane Moriarty book of the same name, came along, Shai wasn’t convinced.
She explains, “I didn’t know what it was or who was involved, I just said, ‘Thanks, I’m still not interested.'”
Her agents didn’t let her walk away without insisting that she at least read the script and see which other big-name stars were attached, and that’s where everything clicked.
“I read it, fell in love with it, and Laura [Dern], who I had worked with on The Fault in Our Stars, called me and that was really the push,” she recalls.
Shailene will be returning as Jane Chapman for Big Little Lies, season 2, which is expected to premiere at some point in 2019.
