Selena Gomez Lands TIME Cover ’cause of Insta Followers & People are PISSED

By  |

Ellen DeGeneres — the first person to star as an openly gay character on prime-time TV. Oprah Winfrey — the first woman to own and produce her own talk show. Hillary Rodham Clinton — the first woman to win a major party’s nomination for President. All of these remarkable women were rightfully included on TIME‘s list of Firsts: 46 women who are changing the world.

However, there’s one person on that list who people are not entirely impressed by… and that person is none other than Selena Gomez.

The 25-year-old superstar was one of 12 women featured on the cover of one of the Firsts issues, as she is the first person to reach 100 million followers on Instagram. “Sometimes it’s incredibly difficult to wake up every day knowing there is so much going on in the world,” she captioned the cover on Instagram. “At times I feel selfish, I ask why, I ask how can this change? Will it actually ever change? I try to contribute my heart before anything because it can be so easy to lose the desire to have hope when sometimes all I want to be is angry.”

“When I read about the beautiful women who wake up consciously every day to make a change, it inspires me to want to do so much more,” she added. “Not really sure how I got so lucky @time but thank you for highlighting the power of what we can and will always strive to be. I believe in the goodness in the land of the living. I hope this is just the beginning of more change.”

And it appears that the general public isn’t really sure how she got so lucky either:

Other fierce females who snagged a cover are Hillary Rodham Clinton, Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Ava DuVernay, Sylvia Earle, Nikki Haley, Ilhan Omar, Lori Robinson, Katharine Jefferts Schori, Mo’ne Davis, and Janet Yellen.

Madeleine Albright, Mary Barra, Patricia Bath, Elizabeth Blackburn, Ursula Burns, Candis Cayne, Eileen Collins, Kellyanne Conway, Gabby Douglas, Rita Dove, Ann Dunwoody, Sylvia Earle, Aretha Franklin, Melinda Gates, Carla Hayden, Mazie Hirono, Mae Jemison, Maya Lin, Loretta Lynch, Rachel Maddow, Rita Moreno, Jennifer Yuh Nelson, Danica Patrick, Nancy Pelosi, Michelle Phan, Issa Rae, Shonda Rhimes, Sheryl Sandberg, Cindy Sherman, Kathryn Smith, Kathryn Sullivan, Barbara Walters, Alice Waters, Geisha Williams, and Serena Williams were also featured, but did not get a cover spread.
