How an R5 Member’s Summer Fling Inspired One of Their New Songs

It’s been almost two freakin’ years since R5 released new music, so when we heard the band was putting out their fifth EP, New Addictions, we were PUMPED! We’ve seen Ross Lynch in various projects, even though he’s no longer filming Austin & Ally, but we’ve been going through some serious withdraws from the rest of the crew. Rydel Lynch, the only girl in the band full of boys, recently stopped by our office before the group’s NYC concert to talk about the songs, her relationship with Ellington Ratliff, and so much more.

While the 23-year-old star says she’s not completely into the writing process of making an album, her brothers and boyfriend totally are.

She explained, “[Ross] filmed the two movies and did A Chorus Line at the Hollywood Bowl, so that took up his whole summer. That’s when Rocky and Ellington were in the studio and as soon as Ross wrapped up his films, that’s when the three of them were really in the studio. You wouldn’t see them all day — they’d just be in the studio.”

Her favorite track on the EP is called “Lay Your Head Down,” which is a song inspired by her 22-year-old sibling’s recent summer fling.

“The first time I heard it I was just like, ‘Oh my gosh this is amazing.’ It’s the song Rocky sings on the album and he’s never had a full song to himself. He kept trying to pawn it off to Ross. He wrote the whole thing himself. We were like, ‘You HAVE to sing it!! This is your song.’ It’s a great song. It’s about this Polish girl he met in Japan and they had a little bit of a summer fling. It’s kind of slow. It kind of [has] John Mayer, Ed Sheeran vibes.”

Although Rocky’s brief romance didn’t last, Ross and Riker both have longtime girlfriends, who Rydel (luckily) LOVES.

“They’ve had girlfriends I haven’t liked before,” she said. “There was this one girl, she was just bad news and everyone knew it by Riker. We were like, ‘Dude, what are you doing?!’ It took him a while to realize and then he was like, ‘Why didn’t I listen to you guys sooner?!'”

The blonde herself is also in a long-term relationship with the only non-related member of the band, and even though she and Ellington are obviously super in love, she says they “act more like best friends than [they] do boyfriend and girlfriend.” #GOALS!

R5’s “New Addictions” EP is out on May 12!

Rydel Lynch and Ellington Ratliff are just one pair of band members that ended up dating each other:
