Ruby Rose Deletes Twitter Following Batwoman Casting Backlash
The casting of The CW’s Batwoman, who is modeled after the 2006 reincarnation of the character (an outspoken, Jewish lesbian who fights crime in Gotham), was critical. Execs reportedly sought out an openly gay actress for the role — finally!!! — and were thrilled to land upon Ruby Rose in the end.
The 32-year-old actress says she’s “beyond thrilled and honored” to be portraying the iconic superhero on the CW’s upcoming DC universe crossover event, which will combine The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, but unfortunately, not everyone shared the same feelings.
Ruby faced tons of backlash over the casting, with some people saying it’s a problem that she’s not Jewish and others saying she’s “not gay enough” to play the LGBTQ+ character. After days of this torment, the Australian beauty decided to remove herself from the hate by deleting her Twitter account.
“Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read,” she wrote in a series of since-deleted tweets. “I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.
When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable… when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey/ love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more, My wish was we were all a little kinder and more supportive of each other…Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it’s been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially.
I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”
RR also severely restricted the comments on her Instagrams, seemingly only allowing those she follows to write anything on her photos.
