You Guys Just Have to Meet Zendaya’s New Crush, Ross Butler
If you don’t know who Ross Butler is just yet, get ready to see a whole lot more from him. He recently joined the cast of K.C. Undercover, where he’ll be playing the mystery boy that K.C. (a.k.a. Zendaya) is totally crushing on. Not only is he lucky enough to be starring alongside one of our favorite Disney Channel stars, BUT he’ll also be making his DCOM debut this summer in the highly anticipated Teen Beach Movie 2. Plus he also has an exciting project coming up where he got to work with Bella Thorne, so obviously we had to chat about that, too.
Read the full interview so you learn all there is to know about Ross before he really takes off:
1. Congratulations on Teen Beach Movie 2! Teen Beach left us with the characters from Wet Side Story joining the real world. Can you tell us a little more about the sequel?
“Yeah, so obviously the people from the imaginary world come into the real world. Lots of crazy antics happen because people in the real world aren’t used to it and it’s weird to see the reversal of what happens in the first movie. All I can really say is there is going to be a lot of dancing and crazy music. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We all just saw it and we’re really happy and really excited to show it. It’s going to be great.”
2. Do you remember where you were when you got the news you would be playing Spencer?
“I think I was sleeping. I was up late the night before — I’m more of a night owl. My manager called me and told me the news. I was still half asleep and I started freaking out.”
3. What can you tell us about Spencer?
“Spencer is new in this movie. He lives in the real world and is a friend of Mack. He is kind of the studious kid at school and is into a lot of extracurricular activities. He has a lot of his future planned out. It was a refreshing character for me to play because it wasn’t necessarily how I was when I was growing up (laughs).”
5. There are a lot of fun songs in Teen Beach. Do you do any of the singing and dancing for this movie?
“No, I don’t do any of the singing. I’m not that much of a singer. I’m not much of a dancer either and originally I wasn’t supposed to do any of the dancing in the movie. The first week of filming in Puerto Rico they said to show up for rehearsals and that they would give me some moves and see how I do with the choreography. So, I ended up in one of the dance numbers but I definitely do not sing!”
6. Was it awkward joining a cast where they already knew each other?
“Not really. The first day when they picked me up from the airport I went right to the set and met everybody. They were all really cool. I could tell they were like one, big family. I was kind of the new kid, but they were all really welcoming and really fun. The people from Wet Side Story were only there for about a week and then they went back to LA. I was there with mainly Ross (Lynch) and Maia (Mitchell). They were all really cool and I’ve been hanging out with them the past month for promos too. They are a really cool family to be a part of and all very warm and welcoming.”
7. Did you all do anything fun off-set?
“Oh yeah — would all get together after we wrapped up every day because we were at the same hotel. It was a beach resort so we would go to the beach all the time and go swimming. There was actually this karaoke night that I missed out on because it was right before I arrived. I was really mad about that! One of the days when we were waiting to get called to set, one of the dancers taught us how to salsa. That was a lot of fun. We kept the dancing thing going on and off-set.”
8. Let’s switch gears for a minute and talk K.C. Undercover. What’s it like playing Zendaya’s love interest?
“(Laughs) It’s really funny because she is definitely a firey spirit. She’s actually really chill but her character is really, really feisty. It was the same as with the Teen Beach cast. She was really welcoming when I first got there. They had already shot eight episodes before I got there so they were already a family on and off-set. So when I got there I had to warm up to the mom, dad and brother — in real life and in the show. It was really cool. She’s just a really chill person and working with her was really easy because she’s super professional. The transition into being her love interest was not hard at all, plus she’s a beautiful girl so it wasn’t that hard.”
9. Were there ever any awkward moments between you and Zendaya?
“Not really. Like I said, she’s very professional and knows what she’s doing. There were some moments when we were doing stunts when she kicked me sometimes. I was a little nervous going into the fight scenes after that, but other than that there was nothing else.”
10. Do you hang out with the cast a lot?
“When we were on-set we would hang out all the time. Kadeem (Hardison), who plays K.C.’s father, and I used to play X-box all the time or PS 4. Since we all live in LA and we shoot in LA it’s nice to get outside sometimes too.”
11. Do you consider yourself smooth when it comes to girls in real life?
“I can’t really gage myself on that. When I was little bit younger I used to be a little but more smoother than I am now. I’m focusing more on my career right now. At this point in my life I’m more into learning more about a person rather than trying to be smooth or cool. But, I can’t really gage my own smoothness.”
12. You’re also in the upcoming Lifetime movie with Bella Thorne, Perfect High. What is it like working with Bella?
“In contrast with Zendaya, Bella is the complete opposite. Zendaya is really chill and cool. Bella is like a little energizer bunny. She jumps around everywhere and is always singing and dancing. It’s a really interesting contrast to go from one to the other, and I love them both equally. I’m really excited for her fans to see it because I think it’s a side of Bella that her fans haven’t seen before. For this movie we all had to dig pretty deep and it was kind of new for all of us. We were all having a really interesting time discovering ourselves in the mindset of this really drugged out world and I’m really impressed with Bella and everyone else.”
13. You have a lot of exciting projects coming up, but what would be your dream role?
“If I could be in any movie from the past few years it would be something like Inception. I like something with a really great storyline, characters and concept. I like doing things that are new and cutting edge. Before Inception there wasn’t anything like invading someone’s dream. And Joseph Gordon-Levvitt was in that as a young actor. I can’t really say what my dream role is just yet, but it’s something that has yet to be created and when it comes along, it comes along.”
14. Is there a certain actor or actress that you would love to work with?
“Tom Hanks — he’s one of the reasons I got into acting — and Russell Crowe, as well. Also, a young Al Pacino and Robert Downy Junior. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s career is kind of how I want to create my career. He’s very involved with his recording and production company and also worked on some really great projects. On the women’s side, I would really love to work with Rachel McAdams and Natalie Portman — they are my hollywood crushes.”
