Meet the Cast of ‘Romeo & Juliet’
It’s safe to assume that just about everyone has heard of William Shakespeare‘s seminal play, Romeo + Juliet, but it’s about to be introduced to a whole new generation! That’s right, the latest film version of Shakespeare’s work is hitting the big screen on October 11, and there’s a reason this tale of forbidden love has resonated with readers for the last few hundred years.
Featuring an all-star cast, this adaptation is sure to last through the ages as well. While you might know who most of the cast is, we wanted to break down who is playing who so you have a little refresher before you head out to the theater. So, without further ado, we present to you a character guide to Romeo + Juliet!
Douglas Booth as Romeo:
British actor Douglas Booth is taking on the role of Romeo, who hails from the house of Montague. He falls in love with Juliet – who is from the rival house of Capulet – and a forbidden love is formed. As for Douglas in real life, he’s shared the screen with stars such as Miley Cyrus, Channing Tatum, and more! Also, he’s modeled for Burberry alongside Emma Watson. Not too shabby!
Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet:
Hailee Steinfeld broke onto the scene in a BIG way after earning an Oscar nomination for her role in the 2010 film True Grit. Ever since then, she’s been working on numerous projects, and has even become a mini fashion maven thanks to the fact she’s the face of major fashion brand Miu Miu! And as for her role as Juliet in the film, she adopted a pretty convicting British accent to play the star-crossed lover!
Kodi Smit-McPhee as Benvolio:
Now, you might not recognize Kodi Smit-McPhee right away, but if you loved ParaNorman, you’ll certainly know his voice! Kodi voiced the main character in the hit 2012 animated film, and is now taking on the well known role of Benvolio in Romeo + Juliet. In case you didn’t know, Benvolio is the cousin and best friend of Romeo.
Ed Westwick as Tybalt:
You probably know Ed from his role as Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl, but get ready to see him like you’ve never seen him before! For Romeo + Juliet, Ed is playing Tybalt who is Juliet’s cousin, and insists on dueling with Romeo. However – as you could imagine – the duel doesn’t end well. However, Ed does get to use his native accent (British!) in this film, as he used an American accent during the seven season run of GG.
Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet:
Lord Capulet is the father of Juliet and patriarch of the house of Capulet. Played by British actor Damian Lewis, you might recognize him from his work on the critically acclaimed drama, Homeland. In fact, he’s even won an Emmy for his work on the show!
And there you have it! While there are more people in the cast, we just wanted to give you a quick breakdown. Don’t forget to see Romeo + Juliet when it hits theaters on October 11!
