Let the Stars Guide You to a Red Carpet Prom!

By  |

Whether it’s the Emmys, Oscars, People’s Choice Awards, or Grammys, everyone knows the best part of tuning in for Hollywood’s big awards events is watching the stars strut their fab styles down the red carpet. From judging fashion fails to jaw-dropping looks, there’s nothing we love more than channeling Joan Rivers Kelly Osbourne from our living room couches. While it might seem unfair that celebs get to have all the fun playing dress-up, you too can have your red-carpet moment at your prom or formal this year!

Our friends at Wetpaint and your favorite small-screen stars are guiding you to your perfect red-carpet prom look. Get inspiration from your favorite girls for that prom perfect look below!

THE TRENDSETTER: Move over Sarah Jessica Parker — there’s a new sheriff in the world of fashion and her name is Blake Lively. For reals, Blake never fails to push the style envelope and the results are always attention-grabbing ensembles.

If you really want to make a splash at the biggest dance of the year, dare to be unique. Don’t forget Blake’s signature style standout: just the right set of heels. “Oh my gosh, I have an entire walk-in closet dedicated to shoes! I think maybe over 300 pairs,” Blake revealed to Showbiz Spy.

Well, maybe that’s a bit obsessive — one fabulous pair is all you need for your extravagant evening.

THE BALLERINA: This isn’t a wedding — it’s prom, people! — so there’s nothing wrong with embracing your inner swan and daring to shine in white. Kim looks downright stunning in this gorgeous structured mini by Australian designer Maticevski.

Believe it or not, this red-carpet standout wasn’t Kim’s original plan. “At first I had on a long black gown, but thought — you know what, the Grammys are about being fun and funky — so I changed my dress last-minute!” she gushed on her website. Good move.

When your dress is a work of art this fabulous, it’s best to pull your hair into a sleek ballet bun so your frock can claim center-stage. For your corsage, drop your date some hints for a magenta orchid to add a bright dash of color to your ensemble, and — voilà! — you’re picture ready!

THE POP STAR: Between the lace, tulle, bracelets, and edgy black nail polish, Hellcats cheerleader Ashley Tisdale is totes channeling Madonna circa her famous 1984 “Like a Virgin” performance.

We’re all over stealing Ash’s head-to-toe look for prom night — fun, sexy, and youthful all in one package! Apparently, prepping will be a cinch, too. The Tis once told MTV, “It usually takes me, like, five minutes to get red-carpet ready — I literally don’t think of it ’til that morning.”

Well, we’re not sure we completely believe that, though a low pony and a quick dash of gloss and blush does seem easy enough.

THE TOMBOY: Are you one of those girls that’s, like, so not into makeup or clothes? Maybe showing cleavage makes you feel more uncomfortable than empowered? We feel ya. In this situation, we recommend taking a tip from gorgeous Shailene Woodley.

Her ruched razorback frock looks supremely comfortable, but the combo of clean lines and a silver shade results in an overtly elegant effect.

“I feel like a turtleneck dress that’s long-sleeved and covers your entire body but is tight-fitting is so much sexier than boobs spilling out, you know? So I guess I’m more into being classy sexy versus apparent sexy,” Woodley told Seventeen. We definitely approve. To glam up your look, follow Shai’s lead and opt for show-stealing matching pumps… OMG, how fetching are those!

THE PRINCESS: If you’ve ever fantasized about being a princess, then you should definitely take style cues from Glee star Lea Michele. Normally, she’s pretty low-maintenance — Lea recently told Glamour UK, “I love dressing up and I love going to events, but for everyday, I wear leggings, t-shirts, and boots. No makeup.”

That doesn’t stop the petite cutie from pulling off red carpet-ready transformations, as epitomized by this stunning Oscar de la Renta gown.

And, really, does it get any more fairytale-ish than bubble-gum pink ruffles? If you choose a showstopper like this for your big night, opt for a relaxed and romantic up-do like Lea’s loose chignon.

THE MODEL: We adore Shay Mitchell in this bright and breezy number. Shay lets the colorful print be the star, pairing her dress with simply elegant nude pumps — the perfect choice for prime prom months like April and May, and also perfect for dancing!

It’s true Shay used to be a professional model, but you too can pull off this look with a little confidence. Why not try Shay’s own esteem-boosting technique? The Pretty Little Liars beauty told Parade, “When I get ready to go out anywhere, there’s an intense hour-long session when I’m just dancing around my apartment blasting music. I don’t know why, but nothing gets me hyped up like that. I pretend to be in a music video or something. I’ll pretend to be Beyonce; I’ll just let it go. It’s like a mini workout session, too.” Um, awesome!

THE STARLET: Of course, if you really want to impress your high-school peers, you can always opt for the wow factor. Enter Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries.

The talented actress knocked it out of the park with a little Zuhair Murad couture at the 2010 Emmy Awards. Add in some chandelier earrings and a swept-up do, and Nina is the epitome of the classic Hollywood screen star.

This might not be the ideal choice for you if you like to cut the rug on the dance floor — but your prom pictures will be AHHHH-MA-ZING!
