Zayn Malik Opens Up About Split with Gigi Hadid & It’ll Tear You Up Inside
Celebrity breakups are nothing new. Heck, two weeks ago, one of Hollywood’s longest-reigning duos announced its demise, Channing Tatum & Jenna Dewan. (Like… some members of the Clevver team were still in middle school when they fell in love on the set of Step Up. Ugh.) Nevertheless, despite the constant splits, we’re still not numb to the pain. That much is clear when we think about the fall of Zayn Malik & Gigi Hadid.
Last month, the 25-year-old musician and 22-year-old supermodel announced that they broke up after over two years of dating. Zayn tweeted:
“Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship, and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and a friend,” Malik posted first. “She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at the time, we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ”
Gigi echoed Z’s sentiments, tweeting:
“Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years .. not only in the relationship, but in life in general,” she wrote. “I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will always be. xG.”
Notice, though, that no reason was given for the Zigi’s ending. Well, until now…
In an interview with On Air with Ryan Seacrest, the former One Direction member revealed that he wrote his latest song, “Let Me,” about his beautiful ex-girlfriend “seven, eight months ago,” when they were very much still together, and that he had every intention of still being with the model today.
“I was in love — and I think that’s pretty evident,” he explained. “And yeah, I was aspiring to be in love with someone for the rest of my life and the rest of theirs, as we all do.”
So, what happened? “Things change and we move forward in life. Times change, but yeah, that’s what I was thinking when I wrote it.”
The crooner also discussed the process that goes into writing a breakup track such as this, saying, “We go through experiences so we have memories and we have stories and things to write down and you know, contemplate and think about. You get to really put your experience into something that’s going to be remembered forever.”
