What Caused Controversy on the Set of Pretty Little Liars, Season 6B is Ridic

By  |

The upcoming season of Pretty Little Liars may be set five years in the future, but that doesn’t mean the drama didn’t follow the girls after they left Rosewood. In fact, if the latest details about the longest-running ABC Family (soon-to-be Freeform) series tell us anything, you can expect even more crazy antics!

Though Hanna is not pregnant (like many believed of Ashley Benson‘s character), she still finds herself engaged, Aria is a publisher, Emily is a bartender, Alison is a teacher (in Rosewood) and Spencer is working in Washington, D.C. as what Troian Bellisario calls a “glorified coffee-getter.” As far as relationship go, your favorite OTPs are all over the place. And, as far as controversies go, while there are a lot, you won’t believe what caused the most uproar.

“That’s such a controversial thing,” showrunner I. Marlene King laughed when we caught up with her at New York Comic-Con 2015. The “that” she’s referring to: Spencer Hastings’ hair. Or, more specifically, her new bangs.

Troian said of the controversial trimming, “It’s so funny because when we were talking about taking the characters five years forward, everyone wanted a really, really new look. I thought, actually, that I would not be affecting the character’s look so much. I was like, ‘I’m not going to dye my hair a color.’ Lucy [Hale] went lighter, Ashley [Benson] went longer and Shay [Mitchell] kind of stayed the same. For me, I wasn’t going to dye my hair a crazy color, because Spencer wouldn’t, but she’s very classic, so I thought maybe bangs.”

Boy, did she underestimate the fandom’s need for knowledge. “It was the most controversial, weird thing,” she explained. “I felt like when Keri Russell cut her hair on Felicity *laughs*. Everybody was like, ‘Eww, bangs!’ ‘Love the bangs!’ ‘Hate the bangs!’ ‘Why did you do this?’ ‘Are the bangs real?’ I was like, ‘Guys, they’re bangs!’ So it’s really funny.”

So what that she’s working in Washington, D.C. at the age of 23, right? No big deal.”Yeah, it’s so funny when people have seen pictures of me and they’re freaking out about the bangs. I’m like, ‘What about the fact that Spencer is at Capitol Hill right now and working in Washington, D.C.? No one cares about that, they just want us to tell them about the bangs.”
