How Olivia Holt Landed Her Dream Movie Role — After Initially Getting Denied!
When watching a movie, people typically don’t stop to think about how an actor landed a role. Instead, the assumption is that the star merely auditioned and got the part, or were turned away for whatever reason. Being repeatedly rejected is part of the life of an actor, but in Olivia Holt’s case, she refused to take ‘no’ for an answer.
The 18 year old is known mainly for her comedic chops, which she showed off for years in several Disney Channel shows. And while her upcoming movie Class Rank is also a comedy, fans will finally get to see the 18-year-old actress prove her talents on the big screen… but the process to get there was not at all easy. We recently caught up with Olivia just after she was announced as Neutrogena’s newest brand ambassador (!!!!) and discussed how she scored her first leading feature-film role — after initially being turned down!
After reading the script for the coming-of-age flick, the blonde beauty immediately knew that she wanted to portray Veronica Krauss. Olivia explained that she spoke with the film’s director via Skype, and although the meeting went well, she got the sense that he’s wasn’t too keen on her taking over the part.
“We got along great, we had great conversation, but I could definitely tell that I was not the girl he was looking for,” she told us.
And while the Disney girl said she “was so passionate about this character and…wanted the part so badly,” her suspicions were confirmed once she met with Eric Stoltz in person.
“I think he saw me and was like ‘no,’ that was the initial reaction.”
Rather than accept rejection, Olivia was persistent in showing him that she was qualified for the role. “Honestly, I just wanted to be in the film, that’s how much I loved it. I didn’t care if I was in the background; I just really wanted to be a part of the film.”
To convince the director that she actually would be great fit for Veronica, the I Didn’t Do It star filmed and submitted three scenes from the script, each one showcasing a different facet of her acting abilities. A week later, she got a call saying her passion changed his mind and she got the part!
“I never experienced anything like that before. Usually I’m just like, ‘alright, I understand. They don’t want me for the part. I get it. They have their reasons, right?’ But this was one of those times where I was like, ‘I gotta take a leap of faith’ and really just gotta go for it, and I’m really happy that I did; this film is the most proud I’ve been of any film that I’ve worked on.”
Now that’s dedication! It’s no wonder why Neutrogena chose Olivia to join the ranks of Jennifer Garner, Bella Thorne and Kerry Washington to support their new #SeeWhatsPossible campaign — no matter what you should NEVER give up on your dreams.
