10 Roles That Nicholas Hoult Could’ve Played… But Didn’t
July 6, 2018
is a terrific actor; one who’s competed against a bunch of other young talents for parts… and won. He played Marcus Brewer in Nicholas Hoult About a Boy, Beast in the X-Men prequel franchise, Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road, etc. Still, that doens’t mean he doens’t lose out on big parts as well.
“There are hundreds you audition for and give terrible auditions for,” he told
. “Sometimes I walk out and I’m like, ‘Wow, that was embarrassing.'” Entertainment Weekly
To prove to you that even good actors have their bad days, here are 10 roles that Nick could’ve played… but lost out on in the long wrong:

Young Herman Rosenblat,
In 2005, a documentary titled
The Fence (or El Cerco, depending on where you're from) was filmed. The purpose of the doc was to tell the story of Herman Rosenblat, a concentration camp survivor who coincidentally reunited with a girl who secretly helped feed him during the Holocaust. (The story was proved to be a hoax, though.) Nick was originally supposed to star as the younger version of Mr. Rosenblat, but, supposedly, after production delays, fellow Brit Thomas Brodie-Sangster was cast instead.

Like many other talents, Nick was tapped to star on an episode of
Doctor Who. Unfortunately, since he was only 16 at the time of filming the particular episode he was up for, it caused some issues with licensing.
Mark Gatiss, the writer of the Season 2, Episode 7 episode, titled "The Idiot's Lantern," originally released on November 10, 2006, told , "I also remember Nicholas Hoult was going to play [the part of Tommy Connolly], but we couldn't get the license to work because he was too young! But Doctor Who Magazine Rory Jennings, who played Tommy was wonderful, and he was actually a lot older than he looked."

Notes on a Scandal
Fox Searchlight Pictures
The following year, Nick could've also appeared in the 2007 crime romance
Notes on a Scandal. The role the British cutie was up for was the part of Steven Connolly, a 15-year-old student who has an affair with his art teacher, played by Cate Blanchett. Supposedly, Nick auditioned for the part several times but came up short because, eventually, Andrew Simpson was cast.
"Nicholas Hoult was in the running since January, so it was tough for a lot of people," Andrew told
in 2007. "I just walked in and said, 'That's the boy from Total Film About a Boy! How tall are you?' I was starstruck. He's probably sick to death of being asked what it was like to work with Hugh Grant."

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Walt Disney Pictures
Can you imagine Nick Hoult as part of the
Chronicles of Narnia franchise? 'cause it could've happened... had he not completely BOMBED his audition!
"One of my all-time worst [auditions] was definitely Prince Caspian," he revealed to
in 2013. "They asked if I could do a Hispanic accent. I was like, 'What would I base that on?' They were like, 'Have you seen Entertainment Weekly Shrek? Puss in Boots.'"
"I was doing the scene, but in my head before saying each line, I was trying to do my
Antonio Banderas impression, saying [in a Desperado voice], 'I am Prince Caspian!' It was horrendous. It sounded more like Borat."
It's all good, though, 'cause
Ben Barnes did a great job, and Nick went on to do other great things.

Multiple reports suggested that Paramount had originally eyed more recognizable talents, like Nick Hoult and
Garrett Hedlund, to portray Kyle Reese in the fifth Terminator film. However, the same reports claim that those particular actors didn't want to read for the role, which led the movie studio to focus on lesser-known stars. Since Divergent only came out in 2014, the year before Terminator Genisys hit theaters, Jai Courtney was relatively unknown still, thus, his inclusion in T5.

When casting for the
Robert Redford-led Netflix sci-fi flick The Discovery was first announced, Nick was tapped to play Robert's son. However, when it came time to shoot, NH was no longer attached and Jason Segel took his place.

Rupert Turner (Adult),
The Death and Life of John F. Donovan
In February 2016, it was announced that Nick would be part of a star-studded drama called
The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, appearing alongside Kit Harington (as the titular character), Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, Natalie Portman, Michael Gambon, Bella Thorne, Thandie Newton, Chris Zylka, and more. Five months later, though, IndieWire received word that the lesser-known Ben Schnetzer would be replacing Nick in the project as the adult version of Rupert Turner. ( Jacob Tremblay is tapped to play the younger version.)
Not sure what really went wrong, but considering
Jessica Chastain and Taylor Kitsch were also originally attached but got the axe as well, we're thinking it wasn't Nick's fault.

Taron Egerton and Jamie Dornan are set to play the dynamic duo Robin Hood and Will Scarlet, respectively, in Lionsgate's production of Robin Hood, starting on November 21, 2018. However, before Taron snagged the coveted role, many young Hollywood cuties were reportedly on the shortlist (via Deadline), including Dylan O'Brien, Jack Huston, Jack Reynor and, of course, Nick Hoult.

Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise has been set to reprise his role as Maverick ever since the Top Gun sequel was announced, but with Anthony Edwards' character, Goose, out of the picture following his famous death, it seemed fitting to include his offspring in TG2.
As recently as June 2018 (via
), Nick, The Hollywood Reporter Glen Powell and Miles Teller were in the running to play the son of Maverick's wingman/best friend. However, confirmed this week that Miles nabbed the ~top~ spot. THR

Artemis Fowl II,
Long before Disney cast Hollywood newbie
Ferdia Shaw as the titular character in next year's Artemis Fowl, Nick was rumored to author Eoin Colfer's favorite prospect for the film adaptation.
Sadly for Nick, with all the delays in production, he grew too old to play the child prodigy.
