Netflix’s New Show is Problematic AF and Fans are NOT Happy

When Netflix released the trailer for their new series, Insatiable, they probably weren’t expecting the reaction that occurred.

The show focuses on an overweight teenager named Patty, played by Debby Ryan. Patty’s portrayed as a lazy, depressed, unpopular girl who gets bullied daily for her weight. Then, when a homeless man punches her over a candy bar, she gets her jaw wired shut and magically gets skinny — yes, really. Now a “hot” girl, Patty decides to get revenge on all those who have wronged her. She goes crazy, punching people and even pouring gas on a sleeping man and striking a match to seemingly light him on fire.

There are about a million things wrong with this show. First off, the “sad, fat person who becomes skinny and attractive” trope is one of the most outdated and overdone concepts in Hollywood. Not to mention it perpetuates the myth that fat people can’t be confident and happy the way they are.

Fans were quick to point this out in response to the trailer. Twitter basically exploded with angry tweets directed at Netflix, and people had a lot to say.

As if the “fat girl” trope wasn’t bad enough, people are also criticizing Insatiable for promoting revenge fantasies. As much as people wish they could get revenge on their bullies sometimes, it’s super dangerous to center the show around it when school shootings are happening more often than ever before.

So basically, Twitter has unanimously agreed that Insatiable is trash. No word yet on if Netflix will cancel the show before its August 10 release, but with this much backlash, we wouldn’t be surprised.
