7 Musicians Who Wrote a Song About Their Best Friend
June 23, 2018
It’s no secret that musicians
write songs about people they know. The best music often comes when artists draw from personal experiences, after all. In fact, Taylor Swift has made an entire career off of taking inspiration from things that have really happened to her throughout the years and turning it into incredible jams.
write tunes about love, but there’s so much more to the emotion than just the romantic feelings. The platonic kind is just as great, and these artists know it. Check out our gallery to find out which seven musicians wrote a song about their best friend:

With a band made up of four besties, there’s bound to be a few songs about friendship. One of the first that
The Beatles wrote was "In My Life." The song, which appeared on their album Rubber Soul, was written by John Lennon. He was inspired by a journalist's comment to write a song about his childhood, so he wrote a song that reminisced on the past. The line, "Some are dead, and some are living / In my life I've loved them all," refers to two of John's friends: Stuart Sutcliffe, the original bassist for the Beatles, and Peter Shotton, his lifelong best friend and business partner.
And of course, we can't forget The Beatles' other hit song, "With A Little Help From My Friends."

Destiny's Child was the definition of female friendship. The three stars always had each other's backs, through the good times and the bad. When Kelly Rowland was in an abusive relationship, Beyoncé and Michelle Williams wrote "Girl" as both a message of support and a plea for her to leave him. Kelly told Philadelphia's Hot 107.9 Morning Show back in 2013 that she got emotional hearing the song for the first time.
"Destiny's Child is deeper than what people see on the surface," she said. "Those are my homies for life. For life! Those girls, we stuck with each other — period."

Nine years after Destiny's Child released "Girl,"
Kelly Rowland came out with a song of her own called "Dirty Laundry." The tune addressed what "Girl" alluded to: her abusive relationship.
Kel also admitted in the song that she was jealous of Beyoncé's solo success after Destiny's Child, but the two got through their issues and stayed close. When she played it for B, in fact, she loved it.
"She was just like, 'I never left,'" Kelly told
93.9 WKYS. "Which was so sweet. It was endearing. She heard how real I was, and she was just like, 'I'm so proud of you.'"

Bo and Bear Rinehart were feeling all sorts of brotherly love when they made the song "Brother" in 2014. Although the tune is about them having each other's backs, it was made after months of fighting between the two. In a " behind the song" video on the band's YouTube channel, Bo said, "The song ‘Brother’ came out of a pretty dark place for the band. We kind of had become the cliché about brothers in bands. We fought more than we made music, and that’s not what we got into it for, and it took us a long time — a lot longer than it should have — to learn that lesson … when we got back together, Bo wrote this song. It’s sort of a love song to me, which I’m kind of proud of."
We’re so glad the two were able to work things about and stay together as a band!

Adele was studying at the BRIT School of Performing Arts when she wrote "My Same." The song was originally intended for a demo she made for a class project, but it ended up being on her first studio album, 19. During a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the crooner revealed she wrote the song after a falling out with her best friend, Laura. Luckily, they made up eventually, and the girl was even in the audience at the concert!

Taylor Swift always writes songs about people she knows, so it’s no surprise that a few are about her BFF, Abigail Anderson. On "Fifteen," T.Swift sings about her freshman year of high school, when she and Abby became friends. She describes how they met (sitting next to each other in class) and both of their first real heartbreaks.
Tay asked for Abigail's permission to record the song, and Abby even ended up starring in the music video for it. And that's not the only video she's featured in! In "
I’m Only Me When I’m With You," the blonde shows a bunch of different home video clips, many of which feature the redhead.

What better way for a musician to honor a friend than with a song? When
Jason Mraz wrote "Song for a Friend," he used it as a way to thank his former roommate, Jerry, for all that he had done for him. The musician told , "He drove me to all my first gigs when I didn’t have a vehicle. He also paid the rent for a year when I couldn't. The guy's really been there for me. Jerry's a selfless type of guy that doesn't want repayment. So I thought what better way to do it than to thank him on an album, in a song. He's a music lover — that's why he supports me. I wanted to throw back at him all the brilliant things that he had done." Songwriter Universe
