6 Times Musicians Covered Their Celebrity Friend’s Song in Concert

By  |

Some songs are just too good to be limited to one artist alone. Like, if Taylor Swift was the one and only musician who belted out “Shake It Off” after she released it in 2014, that would be a waste of really catchy lyrics, you know? That’s why we freak every time she and Selena Gomez swap tunes.

But they aren’t the only adorable BFFs who shout each other out in concert with tracks that aren’t their own. We don’t know if it’s because of how perf the bestie moment is or what, but the songs sound even sweeter this way.

1. When Selena Gomez & the Scene performed Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble.”

You have to have been living under a rock to not be familiar with Selena’s dance video to this Tay’s song in 2015, but it was actually two years before that when she performed it for the first time. She was still with The Scene, and they sang at an acoustic UNICEF benefit concert. The beginning seemed a little too fast for her to handle, but then she got to the chorus and killed those high notes.

2. When Maroon 5 performed Taylor Swift’s “Mine.”

It doesn’t get much better than hearing Adam Levine sing a song from one of his fellow Voice advisors, but the very best part of this cover is the look on T. Swift’s face during the entire performance. It’s like she’s watching her biggest dream come true!

3. When Lea Michele performed Katy Perry’s “Firework.”

Back in 2011 when Lea was still a baby on Glee, she delivered one of the best Katy Perry covers we’ve ever heard — which didn’t come as a surprise. If there’s one thing we know about the brunette, it’s that she has some serious pipes.

4. When Niall Horan performed Taylor Swift’s “22.”

What better way to celebrate your 22nd birthday than singing Tay’s ultra-catchy “22” on stage in front of your fans? We doubt anyone besides Niall can say they’ve done that, but TBH, he could have done it a little better. Considering he’s friends with the 27-year old crooner who wrote the song he was covering, maybe he could have known more lyrics besides the chorus, just sayin’…

5. When Kelly Clarkson performed Demi Lovato’s “Cool for the Summer.”

Niall had a pretty fab birthday with his T. Swift cover, but Demi Lovato’s probably wasn’t so bad either. Kelly Clarkson devoted a song to her for her special day during a 2015 concert in San Francisco — can you say #goals? She slowed the song down to a ballad and even shouted Demi out with the sweetest compliment. “To see a kid that used to go to my shows have this huge lustrous career, she’s killing it.” Aw!

6. When Justin Bieber performed Drake’s “Hotline Bling.”

Bieber fans went crazy when he started rapping an acoustic version of Drake‘s song during a Toronto concert. He didn’t sing the entire thing, but the minute and a half he did do. We bet the 31-year-old rapper he used to play b-ball with was pretty impressed by the cover.
