Why Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Lorde Might Be Boycotting the 2018 Grammys
Some of the industry’s biggest names may be boycotting the 2018 Grammy Awards, causing many to wonder if the days of music’s most prestigious night are numbered.
That’s right, the awards show we look forward to every year to find out which artist will be taking home the distinguished Album of the Year award, and to watch our faves take the stage to perform in what is quite possibly the biggest night of their lives, has reportedly been given the ‘decline’ by some of music’s biggest names.
In past years, many celebs like Justin Bieber and Drake openly chose to skip out on the ceremony altogether because they felt like it doesn’t accurately represent talent and artistry, but a new report from Hits Daily Double was just released revealing that many other big names are joining in on the boycott.
Justin Timberlake has been releasing new music all month, along with his album release, set to drop February 2, but the news report claims that he declined to perform or appear at the awards show next weekend because he’s preparing for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Okay, valid excuse, but we should also mention that he’s had bad blood with the Recording Academy for years after reportedly feeling like they snubbed his previous 20/20 Experience album from a few major categories.
And don’t expect to hear any new Reputation performances or a soulful rendition of “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, because Hits Daily Double is also stating that Taylor Swift, Lorde and Ed have all “declined to appear” to the 2018 Grammys. Although Taylor’s Reputation album was ineligible due to its late release date, her first single off the record, “Look What You Made Me Do,” was completely shut out.
Same goes for Ed, who likely won’t be attending because the Recording Academy kept him from some of the top categories to avoid another #GrammysSoWhite controversy, according to many reports. And then we have Lorde, who may be the biggest performance snub of the year due to the fact that she was the ONLY female artist nominated for Album of the Year and wasn’t even asked to perform. This allegedly made her team “extremely unhappy” to the point of boycotting the show altogether.
The news is definitely hitting hard for many who’ve been looking forward to seeing these names grace the stage come January 28, but there are still many HUGE names set to take the stage next weekend, including Kendrick Lamar, Miley Cyrus, Sam Smith, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Cardi B, and many more.
