The Top 10 Most Outrageous MTV Video Music Awards Outfits of the Past Decade

The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards are this Sunday! That means we should all prepare ourselves for our favorite celebrities, some amazing performances and, of course, outrageous fashion.

The Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Emmys and the like are where you’ll usually see stars in their classiest tuxedos or most glamorous gowns. But when it comes to this particular awards show, Hollywood’s finest tend to steal the spotlight in a whole different way.

One of the most unforgettable looks of all time has to be Lil’ Kim‘s mermaid-inspired lavender catsuit with a sequin pasty (or, if you’d prefer, boob onesie). Prior, nipple pasties were never considered as part of a star’s formalwear — now it’s perfectly acceptable. Okay, maybe not perfectly acceptable, but you know young stars like Miley Cyrus & Kendall Jenner are down with them nowadays; Lil’ Kim may be responsible for that.

Oh, and who could forget Macy Gray‘s epic portrayal of a human billboard at the 2001 event? The front of her attire read, “MY NEW ALBUM DROPS SEPT. 18 2001,” and the back said, “BUY IT.” Tacky? Yes. But genius? Also yes.

And, let us tell you, the WTF styles have only gotten crazier over the years. That’s why, before the 2017 show — on Sunday, August 27 at 8pm EST — we’re taking a look at the top 10 most outrageous MTV VMAs outfits of the past decade. Get ready for ’em in 3… 2… 1..
