MTV Introduces ‘Buckwild’ West Virginia Reality Show to Replace ‘Jersey Shore’

After six seasons of never-ending parties and drama, Jersey Shore is over. But before the series finale, which aired Thursday, December 20, its host network already had its replacement lined up. Meet Buckwild, MTV’s new reality show based in West Virginia, which follows the lives of nine twenty-somethings: Shain (“Gandee Candy”), Shae (“The Spicy Southern Belle”), Anna (“The Ringleader”), Joey (“Justin Beaver”), Ashley (“The Tomboy”), Cara (“The Firecracker”), Tyler (“The Pretty Boy”), Katie (“The College Girl”), and Salwa (“Bengali in Boots”). To give you more of a reference, The Hollywood Reporter describes Buckwild as “Jersey Shore meets Honey Boo Boo.”

As you can expect, the Appalachia-set reality series has already drawn up some controversy. West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin III even wrote a letter to MTV, expressing his concerns about his state’s appearance, and even asked that it pull Buckwild from its lineup: “I am repulsed at this business venture, where some Americans are making money off of the poor decisions of our youth… Instead of showcasing the beauty of our people and our state, you preyed on young people, coaxed them into displaying shameful behavior — and now you are profiting from it. That is just wrong… This show plays to ugly, inaccurate stereotypes about the people of West Virginia.”

Buckwild is scheduled for premiere on January 3, 2013 at 10pm ET, airing two half-hour episodes for six weeks totaling 12 episodes (for the time being). To learn more about the series, check out BuzzFeed’s exclusive first-look footage and watch the trailer here:
