Fans of the 1986 John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off were excited to see Matthew Broderick return to one of his most iconic characters in what many speculated was a teaser for a new Super Bowl ad to be aired during the game on February 5th. There is not much to the ten second teaser, but the appearance of a now much older Broderick in what looks like a five star hotel room wearing a robe and declaring, “How can I handle work on a day like today” just felt very Bueller-esque. It became obvious what we were dealing with once the familiar “bow-bow-chik-chika-chika” music came in over a black screen with the date “2.5.12″ across it.
Some suggested that the ad was most likely for a hotel or possibly a hotel website, but Jalopnik has revealed the spot will actually be for Honda. The ad was directed by The Hangover writer/director Todd Phillips and promises to recreate many iconic moments from the film according to a Honda source. A most likely candidate for a possible scene will be a shot of a Honda vehicle soaring overhead ala the parking attendants taking Carmeron Frye’s father’s Ferrari out for a joy ride.
The ad has once again brought on speculation of a possible sequel to the film. Last year, we told you about writer Rick Rapier who was shopping around a spec for a sequel titled Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off. Rapier even posted the first twelve pages of the script online and claimed that executives at Paramount, the studio behind the original film, were considering it. Not much news since then, but could the excitement of a ten second teaser and the full ad that hopefully manages to live up to the early hype be enough to get a sequel on the fast track to the big screen? I guess the real question is, should they even bother with a sequel and just leave Bueller in high school, where he belongs?

Loved FBDO, and the commercial is a wonderful homage, but they should not, I repeat NOT, as in N-E-V-E-R, do a sequel. Some things you just don’t try to improve on or add to.
