Many people assume the hit Netflix movie The Kissing Booth is based on fanfiction because author Beth Reekles initially published it on Wattpad, but that’s simply not the case. The author herself confirmed that while she did post the work of fiction on the highly popular story-sharing website years ago, it was always a completely original tale with completely original characters, making it NOT a fanfic. But while TKB did not start as a tribute to already developed fictional characters, several other popular movies did.

The tale of a fanfic becoming a movie is pretty recognizable in all cases — a publisher contacts an online author, the story gets turned into a book or a series of books and, if successful enough, the rights to that story are purchased by a film studio. So, which flicks got their start thanks to a brilliant mind obsessed with an already created universe? You’re going to have to keep reading to find out! Spoiler alert: they’re some of your faves!
