Tina Fey Confirms ‘Mean Girls’ Musical Is in the Works
This is so fetch. During Sunday night’s Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, Mean Girls screenwriter Tina Fey confirmed that a musical based on the iconic 2004 film is a definite possibility. While speaking with E! News’ Giuliana Rancic, Tina was asked and replied, “Maybe! We want to. I would love to,” continuing, “I’m trying to develop it with my husband [Jeff Richmond], who does all the music for 30 Rock and I think Paramount’s onboard.”
In fact, Tina already has a cast member in mind. Giuliana also asked about what she thought of Mariah Carey quoting Mean Girls during American Idol recently, to which Tina said she “loved” it, and mentioned “Maybe [Mariah] can play Amy Poehler’s part in the musical.” In case you didn’t know, Amy played Regina George’s “cool mom.” Also, since Tina’s hit show 30 Rock is coming to an end after seven seasons this week, she’d have plenty of time to help write the musical.
This wouldn’t be the first time a hit film has been turned into a musical. Back in 2007, a musical based on Reese Witherspoon‘s 2001 flick Legally Blonde hit the great white way. Also, Hairspray has gone back and forth, as the original 1988 film was turned into a musical in 2002, then the musical was turned into a film back in 2007, starring Zac Efron.
We’d be glad to help Tina out as well. Some song titles we came up with off the top of our heads? “Why Are You So Obsessed With Me?,” “So Fetch,” “On Wednesdays We Wear Pink,” and “And None For Gretchen Weiners, Bye.” (To name a few).
