One Fatal Move Left This YouTuber with the Most Disgusting Injuries
Whether we need a good laugh or a good cry, our favorite YouTubers’ videos never disappoint. So, to hear that Marcus Butler, one of the kings of social media, was releasing a book filled life advice, tips, and, obviously, funny anecdotes, it sounded almost too good to be true! It was for this exact reason we had to track down the 23-year-old YouTube star to celebrate the US release of Hello Life!
Marcus’ first book has been at the top of the UK charts since it came out at the end of July, and after our chat with the blond-haired cutie, we know the same will hold true in the US. Filled with all kinds of life and love, Hello Life! will obviously be your go-to source when dealing with drama that comes with growing up. And let us say, just because Marcus is famous now doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his own cringe-worthy moments. In fact, he told us a painfully awk story about how he managed to totally embarrass himself thanks to a YouTube video that left him all kinds of beaten up. Be sure to check out our whole chat with Marcus to hear what exactly happened and be sure to grab copy of his new book ASAP!
We’re so excited that Hello Life! finally hit the US. What made you decide to write a book?
“The first process was when publishers started to get interested in YouTube as writing, so I had a lot of people come to me and be like, ‘Hey, let’s do a book.’ I only wanted to do one when I felt like I had something to talk about. It was when I made a video on my second channel, talking about how I transformed my body throughout the foods I ate and the fitness I took part in and stuff like that, and it received such a good feedback. I guess that was the initial inspiration for the book.”
Since Hello Life! is filled with your own personal advice, we want to know what’s your best dating advice for teens?
“Probably that — and I know it’s going to sound really hard when you’re a teenager — your first girlfriend or boyfriend, or person that you fancy… What’s the American word? Crush! So, when you’re a teenager you think that that person is the one and it’s very easy to get attached and be emotional. If you break up, it’s easy to think, ‘My life is over!’ But, you’re going to have a few more relationships in life and you’ll look back on that one and laugh. It’s very rare for people to stay together from school like that.”
Has anything super embarrassing or awkward ever happened on a date or in front of your crush?
“Yeah, well I am a comedy person, so embarrassing things happen to me quite often. One thing I can picture, though, was when I was with [current girlfriend] Niomi (Smart) in a massive buffet dinner place. I was standing there with a tray and a whole plate and drink on it. I bent down to get something, and my whole tray went flying. It was a massive, massive restaurant and everyone was turning to look. Niomi was just standing next to me with her head in her hand, so embarrassed.”
But, it worked out and you guys are still going strong!
“Yeah, so if you’re in a relationship and unsure, just drop some stuff in a restaurant (laughs).”
A lot of YouTubers have been writing books recently. What’s one thing about your book that makes it different from the others?
“I think mine is different than the others because, for example, one part of mine is about healthy foods and lifestyle. I feel like the YouTubers don’t usually touch on that because not a lot of YouTubers — the ones that I’m talking about — are that interested in it or as passionate in it as I am. I think that sets it apart by itself. On top of that, It’s really quite raw; there’s a lot of stuff I talk about in my upbringing that I’ve never talked about. Maybe some other people may not have gone through in as much detail as that. I wanted to not just talk about my life, but give advice on people who may be going through the same thing.”
Speaking of embarrassing, you’ve done some pretty funny things for your YouTube channel. What do you think was the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done?
“Probably, yes… It’s hard deciding what to choose. I don’t know, I think the fact that I dress up as a girl is quite embarrassing in itself, especially when I ask Niomi to do my hair and makeup and stuff.”
Have you ever gotten an injury while filming one?
“Yeah, I have actually. I filmed a video about two months ago and it was called, ‘Life in a Day with a Segway,’ and it’s basically me on this little Segway thing that all the YouTubers have been using. I was trying to look really cool out in public with it. I was going full speed down the road and I went past a pub. It was packed with people outside and I rolled by like, ‘I’m so cool.’ Literally, like ten minutes later I went flying in the middle of road and landed on my elbow and cut my whole arm up. I’m like terrified of it now. I go on it with great caution (laughs)!”
You’ve been making videos for five years already! What’s been your favorite video so far?
“I have two actually. One is a music video, which I shot about two years ago when I hit a million subscribers. I made a rap parody, and I’m working on a sequel to it as we speak. Then I also did a Halloween special the other day, called the ‘YouTube Horror Movie.’ A lot went into it and it was fun to film.”
You’ve gone to tons of red carpet events and premieres — who’s the coolest celeb you ever met? Have you ever been star struck?
“When the Avengers was out, I was in the front row at the premier and all the stars came in and did a speech. I literally sat a couple feet away from Robert Downy Jr., Chris Hemsworth and literally all the people. I was like, ‘This is really, really cool!'”
Since writing Hello Life!, do you have any additional advice based on recent life experiences that you could add to it?
“I think there probably is something. Maybe in terms of the food section. I would share more things I’ve been learning in my workout stuff and in my routines. If I was to go into detail I could talk about how I’ve since taken my training and nutritional habits to the next level.”
Would you ever consider writing another book?
“Yeah, I think, again, if I came up with the right idea and it was something that I really wanted to do, then definitely. I loved the process of doing the whole first one.”
Is there anything else that you can share with your fans?
“I guess the next most exciting thing I’m working on would be my next music video parody. That’ll be out before Christmas. It’ll be fun.”
