Lucy Hale’s New Show is Basc Anti-PLL, But She Knows Fans Will Still Watch
With seven seasons of one television series under Lucy Hale‘s belt, you would think she’d feel completely at home as the star of another TV show, especially so soon after the last one ended. After all, she’s already got fans (shout out to all the Halers!), at least one successful small-screen production — which wrapped up mere months ago — plus her obvious talent. Nevertheless, that hasn’t kept the jitters away when it comes to Life Sentence.
Earlier this week, we sat down with the 28-year-old actress in New York City to discuss the new dramedy, which aired for the first time on March 7. “It’s always nerve-wracking to do something new,” she revealed to Clevver.com, exclusively. “It’s my face on the poster, I don’t have four other girls to fall back on.” Those four girls? Her fellow Pretty Little Liars stars, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson, Troian Bellisario and Sasha Pieterse.
“Putting yourself out there in that way is a little scary,” she continued, “but I’m really excited. I’m so glad it’s finally out.”
“It’s so nice to be back [on The CW],” the actress added. (FYI, she OG joined the CW family in 2008 for Privileged.) “I’m super proud of Life Sentence.”
“[Reception has] been nice,” she said of the fans’ reactions. “I think it’s different for people to see me in that way and it’s something that, creatively, I was really excited about. I love the character that I play, I love the story that we’re gonna tell later on in the season. I hope that people can relate to it because I think that, whether it’s my character you relate to or one of the dysfunctional family members, you’re gonna see yourself in someone in the show.”
Speaking of fans… Lucy knows that, despite the fact that Life Sentence is basically the total OPPOSITE of Pretty Little Liars, her devoted fans will continue to support her and watch the series. “Those people will follow all of us to whatever we do, so I definitely feel the love from them,” she proudly proclaimed. “But hopefully, you know, it’ll find a new audience because it’s a very different show than PLL.”
For starters, her character is not a liar like Aria Montgomery and her crew. “Stella does tell the truth,” she explained, laughing.
To bring you up to speed on the show, the brunette beauty portrays Stella, a young woman who lived her life like she was dying because she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. (Ex. She married a man she barely knew because, well… she thought death was knocking on her door, so why the heck not?) The ~problem~ (a.k.a. blessing): her so-called terminal cancer… is CURED. Amazing news and all, but Stella must learn to live with all the choices she made when deciding to live like she was dying… which gets complicated.
Of course, that’s not all we talked about. Lucy was in town to chat about her recent partnership with Degree Women, supporting the brand’s collection of UltraClear Black & White Deodorants. The brand recently challenged her to rewear and restyle one of her favorite pieces of clothing… and she did, to perfection. On the left, you can see that she paired the keyhole top with pants while she was out and about in NYC on March 5; on the right, you can see that she paired it with a beautiful printed skirt while attending her first-ever SXSW Film Festival on March 10. Notice that, despite wearing black, there aren’t any white marks in the underarm area? Mission: accomplished.
“The whole purpose of this deodorant is so you can rewear stuff that you love,” she explained. “And it felt really authentic for me because I do that all the time… My favorite staple items, I wear all the time.”
