Unpopular Opinion: “I Can’t Stand Lorde”

Okay, enough's enough. While many Teen.com readers have declared their respect for Lorde and her lack of a filter when it comes to interviews, I, as part of this week's Unpopular Opinion, am on Team Whoever-Lorde-Is-Dissing-This-Time. I can't stand her!

Recently, the New Zealand singer-songwriter explained of her word vomit, "I have pretty strong morals and opinions being in pop music, and I can't help but express those, which I think people appreciate… I mean, I don't think I say anything that isn't backed up. Most of the time I will stand by things that I've said." The issue I have with that statement is not that her comments aren't backed up, but that she feels the need to express negativity in basically all of her interviews.

Ever since "Royals," which is approaching "Call Me Maybe"-annoying territory with its radio plays in my opinion, became popular in the U.S. earlier this past summer, she's taken jabs at Justin Bieber, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Taylor Swift (whom she openly apologized to, sorta), Selena Gomez, as well as other former Disney stars. In her own words, "The difference between those [Disney] kids and me is that I grew up completely normally and went to parties and had that experience. I am way less inclined to be like, 'Look! I'm f**king mental!'"

Fortunately, after Selena heard about Lorde's comments about her and "Come & Get It" being anti-feminist, the 21-year-old fought back saying, "That's not feminism. [Lorde is] not supporting other women. That's my honest opinion, that's what I would say to her if I saw her. I actually covered her song in all of my shows that I've done so far. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue that." I'm not going to say that I'm always on Selena's side, but in this particular case, I am.

For a girl who just joined the ranks of successful musicians in the industry — and at the age of 17, which is AWESOME — I cannot believe how many times Lorde has already teared down the likes of her fellow artists; that's not the way to gain respect. Girl needs to learn.
