The Best Long Distance Relationships Ever Seen On-Screen
Long distance relationships have been a romantic storytelling staple since the beginning of time. I’m pretty sure the quote “absence makes the heart grow fonder” was written by a guy, who was crushing on a girl, who lived in a far off village and could only communicate through handwritten letters delivered by a man on a horse. Yeah, that sounds about right!
The latest LDR film (that’s long distance relationship to you newbies) is Like Crazy, starring Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones as students who fall in love only to be torn apart by an expired American Visa. This award winning film, (yup, it’s already won a bunch of awards at Sundance) shows the real challenges a couple goes through together and apart.
But this movie clearly wasn’t the first, ya know! Check out my other favorite romantic LDR flicks below:
For Love of the Game
Billy Chapel chooses the love of a good woman over his passion for baseball. And not only does this film make you fall in love with Kevin Costner, it makes you want to head out to your nearest ballpark to catch a fly ball.
Going the Distance
Drew Barrymore, Justin Long and their real-life chemistry make it easy for us to fall in love with their characters on screen. Is it wrong that I also rooted for them in real life? Unfortch some things just don’t work out.
Not even the bonds of earth can stop the love affair that is Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen. In life they made pottery, and in death they made us all sob. If you haven’t seen this classic, go Netflix it immediately.
Nicholas Sparks sure knows how to write a love story and the beautiful Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum are super easy on the eyes. And in a world of texts and emails, the idea of getting a real-life handwritten love letter makes my knees weak.
Sleepless in Seattle
“What if someone you never met, someone you never saw, someone you never knew was the only someone for you?” With that tagline, how could you possibly go wrong?!? An unconventional LDR with the perfect ending… seriously, perfect.
Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist made us forget they were being played by giant movie stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. I wanted them to be real and I wanted them to ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after.
A cheating boyfriend, a bunch of frat buddies and a missing sex tape go on a road trip to save an LDR. As they say, life isn’t about the destination, it’s all about the journey, and in this case that is the truth.
Which of these LDR stories is your fave? Have you ever been in one yourself? Tell me what you’re thinking in the comments.
