Why Logan Paul Hasn’t Been Banned from YouTube Despite Controversies
Logan Paul has done SO many tasteless things
throughout his entire career over the past few months that it’s almost impossible to understand how people still defend him. Not only did he film the dead body of a man who committed suicide and then post the footage on the Internet, but he also used a taser on a dead rat without ever thinking that he was doing something harmful and offensive.
The 22-year-old did end up getting punished for his actions, however. All ads were suspended from his two YouTube channels, which means he will not be able to make money on anything he uploads (unless it’s a sponsored video, of course). But Logan can still post videos, which begs the question — why has he not been completely banned from the platform?
According to YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, it’s because he hasn’t gotten three strikes (meaning, times his channel violated the platform’s policies) against his account.
“He hasn’t done anything that would cause those three strikes,” she explained at Recode’s Code Media conference. “We can’t just be pulling people off our platform…They need to violate a policy. We need to have consistent [rules]. This is like a code of law.”
She continued, “What you think is tasteless is not necessarily what someone else would think is tasteless. We need to have consistent laws, so that in our policies, so we can apply it consistently to millions of videos, millions of creators.”
There’s an argument that YouTube favors more popular channels, but the 49-year-old says that is not true.
“They might complain about that, but we try our very best to be consistent across everybody,” she said.
Susan adds that the decision to not allow Logan to make ad money on his videos is “a pretty strong statement” that proves YouTube does not take his actions lightly.
