ABC Scraps Plans to Air Live-Action Version of The Little Mermaid This Fall

If you were looking forward to seeing Ariel, Sebastian, Ursula and the rest of the Little Mermaid crew come to life in the live-action version of the Disney movie this fall, we have bad news for you — it’s not gonna happen! ABC recently announced that it’s postponing its plan to create the television adaptation of the classic film, which was originally set to air on Oct. 3.

“We are postponing the Little Mermaid Live special,” an ABC spokesperson said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “We love the idea of doing a live musical and want to make it wonderful. The project is so unique that we are making best efforts to do it next year and want to give it all the attention it deserves.”

While nobody from ABC confirmed the reason for their decision to cancel the October premiere date, USA Today reports that the production’s cost was a major issue.

The newspaper also reports that some sets for the live musical are already built and they were planning to star rehearsals with an unidentified cast soon.

Apparently, the network hopes to not make this postponement a cancellation, and is planning to have it air at an unidentified date in 2018 instead.

Although we won’t go ~under the sea~ as originally planned, there are still quite a few other live-action Disney flicks hitting the market soon. Mulan is set to hit theaters in November 2018, Aladdin production is already underway, and 2019’s adaptation of The Lion King will have Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Donald Glover as Simba, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, and Billy Eichner as Timon. Basically, there’s a TON going on for the Disney-lover in the near future.

Sure, we’re bummed that TLM isn’t happening as planned, but we’ll just cross our fingers that ABC’s plan to have it air next year ends up happening!
