10 Kick-Butt Lesbian Characters Who Were Killed Off TV Shows in 2016
Fall 2013-Spring 2014 marked a sad time in television history. Katherine passed away (for good) on The Vampire Diaries, Allison was killed on Teen Wolf, Finn Hudson died of unknown causes on Glee (after Cory Monteith‘s real-life death)… Last year wasn’t much better, what with the departure of Nina Dobrev from TVD, thus, ending Elena Gilbert’s life on the series (for the next 60 or 70 years, anyway), not to mention the shocking deaths of fan favorites Jon Snow and McDreamy on Game of Thrones and Grey’s Anatomy, respectively.
But if you thought television would take it easy in 2016, you’d be *dead* wrong. This year alone, at least 10 beloved TV characters were killed off their series; and not just any beloved TV characters — but kick-butt lesbian TV characters. Like… WHY? By the end of February, five heroines were already eliminated from their shows. So, when Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) was offed on The 100 at the beginning of March, fans were rioting on social media, calling for better treatment of LGBTQ characters with the hashtags #BuryYourGays and #LGBTFansDeserveBetter. Unfortunately, things only went downhill from there, as there were almost a handful more to list within the following month.
To commemorate those we have lost this year (so far) — though, hopefully there won’t be anymore — here are the fallen homosexual females from the spring 2016 television season:
Mary Louise, The Vampire Diaries
On the April 1 episode of TVD, fans learned that Mary Louise has been held captive in a cell in The Armory. To make matters worse, she's been poisoned... and there's no cure.
But, rather than die from the toxins coursing through her system, she chooses to use the last bit of her magic to destroy the Phoenix Sword that has ravaged the lives of so many vampires. Destroying the weapon causes a massive explosion, which kills her in the process.
